Chapter 2

"Lukey stop!" Mackenzie screamed with laughter, as Luke attacked her sides with tickles. Mackenzie had just had a one on one session with her nurse, and now Luke and herself were in her room. There was never much to do in the hospital. Sure, there was an 'activities room', which consisted of a T.V and a cupboard full of card games, but Luke didn't want her to go there in fear that she might get picked on, or someone would take her away from him. Mackenzie is his and he would like to keep it that way.

"Never!" He laughed along with her.

The nurses outside of the room could hear Mackenzie's screams of laughter. They knew it had to be something to do with 'Luke'. Over the years, the nurses and doctors had tried many different ways of trying to remove Luke – to make Mackenzie a normal girl. But Luke knew what was happening. He would get Mackenzie to lie to the doctors and make her focus on him and nothing else. Which of course she did. She trusted Luke, after all he was her best friend, and because he told her that he was the only one she could trust. He told her the doctors didn't know what they were doing, and he was the only one that could help her.

A knock on the door pulled both of them out of their laughing fits, and back to being aware of what was happening around them. Mackenzie called out to whoever was on the other side of the door, to come in. A young nurse popped her head through the door, Luke immediately frowned at her, even though she couldn't see him, knowing she was going to try and take Mackenzie somewhere. But like always, he would be going as well.

"Mackenzie, we're about to have a small assembly in the activities room. Would you mind following me?" the polite nurse asked.

"Ok," she simply replied, "c'mon Luke." She said before jumping up and grabbing Luke's hand, heading out the door. The walk to the activities room was quiet. Luke watching Mackenzie carefully in case something was to happen to her. He was always on alert when around other people, not wanting anything bad to happen to the girl he cared about more then anything.

When entering the games room, only a few people there so far – mainly teenagers. Mackenzie walked in; arm still stretched out holding onto Luke's hand. She went and sat down on one of the not so comfy floral couches with Luke beside her. As more people filled the room, the fewer seats were left. This didn't bother Mackenzie, until a girl whom she'd never seen before, came over and tried to sit next to her – where Luke was sitting.

"What are you doing?" She yelled at the girl. The girl, who had cherry red hair and brown eyes was new and had only been at the hospital for a week. She was now very confused and scared – what had she done wrong?

"S-sorry," the girl stuttered. By now, a nurse had rushed over to the frightened girl to find her somewhere else to sit.

Mackenzie was a bit shocked herself. She felt guilty for yelling at the poor girl, but what else was she meant to do, just let her sit on Luke? She watched the frightened figure from across the room with a look of sorrow. Luke noticed the sad look on his girls face. Slowly, he moved his thumb up and down her hand, which he was still holding onto, trying to reassure her that everything was ok.

During the assembly, nobody was really paying attention. It was boring like always, and everyone just secretly wanted to go back to what they were doing before. That was until the nurse who was speaking changed the topic.
