The next day goes significantly better. Jungwon grits his teeth, avoids looking Jay in the eyes, and keeps his stuttering mostly to a minimum. He would even dare say that his and Jay’s dynamic is mostly back to normal. So when he’s washing his hands at the end of the day, ready to go home, he’s feeling pretty good about himself, despite the cake batter goo that just won’t seem to leave the underside of his fingernails.
He jumps when he feels someone come up behind him and tap his shoulder, splashing water onto the floor. “Jesus fucking christ! You know I get jumpy when—” he stops himself when he realizes that it’s Jay behind him, because of course it is.
“My bad,” Jay says. Then he pauses for a second, bringing his hand up behind his head to scratch his neck. “Um, I was wondering…” he trails off.
“Wondering what?” Jungwon asks. It’s uncharacteristic of Jay to be so nervous, which is in turn making Jungwon nervous, which is making his stomach flop in all the wrong ways.
Jay pauses again. He opens his mouth like he’s going to finally say something, but closes it quickly.
“You look like a fish,” Jungwon scoffs. “Just fucking say whatever you came to say, oh my god. I don’t have all day.”
Jay laughs sheepishly. “You’re right, sorry. Um, I was wondering if you’re free tonight?”
Jungwon’s eyes widen. This couldn’t possibly be… “I—I don’t know,” he responds in a strangled voice. “I’m a busy man, y’know?”
Jay sighs. “If I talk to you one of these days and you don’t give me a hard time I’d be so surprised,” he deadpans. “Clear your schedule for me?” his eyes have a glint to them that Jungwon just can’t say no to.
“Fine. I guess I can make a little time for you,” he says and sighs dramatically.
Jay puts a hand to his chest. “I’m honored, truly. Anyways, can I pick you up at seven?”
Hold on. Pick me up? That’s literally— Jungwon stops his train of thought right there. “What are we doing?” he asks.
Jay winks. “It’s a surprise. Dress casual, okay?” He turns around to walk away but Jungwon stops him.
“No, wait—you can’t just say that!” he says, gaping.
“Why not? It’ll be fun, I promise.”
“Is this a…” Jungwon trails off, not wanting to finish the question and actually say the d word.
“Is this a what?” Jay asks, eyebrow raised like he’s teasing Jungwon. Fucker knew exactly what I was asking, Jungwon thinks to himself.
“Nevermind,” Jungwon grumbles. “Seven’s fine.”
Jay smiles, bright and blinding. “It’s a date, then.”
Jungwon feels like he’s going to choke.
