CHAPTER TWO: THE AFTERMATH
Sunghoon woke up the next morning with a pounding headache, but it wasn’t from a hangover—it was from the sheer embarrassment of the night before. He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to convince himself that maybe, just maybe, it had all been a weird dream.
Lee heeseung....my bosses son....actually laughed at my ridiculous jokes about pigeons and forks
Sunghoon groaned, rolling over to bury his face in the pillow. “I’m doomed,” he mumbled into the fabric.
After a few minutes of sulking, he finally dragged himself out of bed and started his usual morning routine. He tried to focus on brushing his teeth, fixing his hair, and getting dressed, but his mind kept flashing back to the moment when Heeseung had handed him that business card.
LEE HEESEUNG, VICE PRESIDENT, HANMI GROUP
It was like some cruel twist of fate. Out of all the people in Seoul, his blind date had to be that Heeseung. And now, if Sunghoon didn’t play his cards right, the weirdness from the date could turn into workplace humiliation. He had to avoid Heeseung at all costs.
Sunghoon arrived at the office, a little earlier than usual, hoping to avoid any awkward encounters. He nervously adjusted his collar and made his way to his desk, where his coworker Minji was already typing away at her computer.
“Morning!” Minji greeted cheerfully, barely glancing up. “You look… tense. Everything okay?”
Sunghoon forced a smile. “Yeah, fine. Just, uh, had a weird night.”
Minji finally looked up, eyebrow raised. “Weird how? You didn’t get into a fight with your neighbor’s cat again, did you?”
“No, nothing like that,” Sunghoon muttered, shuffling some papers around his desk. “It’s just—”
Before he could finish, the sound of hushed whispers spread through the office, and Sunghoon turned to see a small crowd gathering near the entrance.
“Is he here already?” one of the interns whispered.
“I heard he’s going to officially take over next week,” another chimed in.
Sunghoon’s stomach dropped. Please don’t be who I think it is.
He glanced up just in time to see Lee Heeseung strolling into the office with an air of confidence that made everyone stand up a little straighter. Dressed in a sharp, tailored suit, Heeseung looked every bit the part of a corporate heir about to take the reins.
Oh no, oh no, oh no. Sunghoon quickly ducked behind his monitor, trying to make himself as invisible as possible. He could not afford for Heeseung to recognize him here.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Minji asked, craning her neck to get a better look. “Who’s that?”
Sunghoon winced. “Uh, that’s Lee Heeseung… you know, the new Vice President."
Minji’s eyes widened. “Ohhh, that Lee Heeseung. Why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?”
“Let’s just say… I’ve had some unexpected run-ins with him recently,” Sunghoon whispered, inching further down into his seat. “And now I need to avoid him for the rest of my life.”
Minji shot him a suspicious look but didn’t push the issue. “Well, good luck with that. He’s the new VP, so I doubt you can just hide in your cubicle forever.”
Fantastic. Sunghoon grumbled internally, eyes glued to his screen as Heeseung made his way through the office, greeting employees and shaking hands.
Sunghoon prayed to every deity he could think of that Heeseung wouldn’t notice him. Blend in, blend in, blend in.
Just as he thought he might escape unnoticed, the universe decided to have a laugh at his expense.
“Sunghoon!” his boss’s voice called from across the room. “Can you come here for a second?”
No, no, no. Sunghoon reluctantly stood up, feeling like a deer caught in headlights. He awkwardly made his way toward the small group that had gathered around Heeseung and his father, the CEO.
“Sunghoon, this is Heeseung,” his boss said, clapping him on the back. “You’ll be working closely with him in the next few weeks as we transition him into the company.”
Heeseung turned toward Sunghoon with a polite smile, completely oblivious to their unfortunate history. “Nice to meet you.”
Sunghoon forced a grin, his heart racing. He doesn’t recognize me. Oh thank god.
“Nice to meet you too,” Sunghoon said, hoping his voice didn’t shake too much.
His boss continued, “Actually, Heeseung’s current secretary is leaving, and we’re looking for someone reliable to take her place. You’re one of our best employees, Sunghoon. I think you’d be a great fit.”
Sunghoon’s brain screeched to a halt. Secretary? To Heeseung?
Heeseung smiled again, this time with a hint of curiosity. “I look forward to working with you.”
Sunghoon felt like his life was flashing before his eyes. He could barely process what was happening. He’d gone from trying to avoid Heeseung to being his secretary in the span of thirty seconds.
“That sounds… great,” Sunghoon mumbled, barely able to hide his panic. He shot a pleading look at his boss, but it was no use. The decision had been made.
As the conversation wrapped up, Sunghoon returned to his desk in a daze, his mind spinning.
Minji leaned over, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Did I hear that right? You’re going to be his secretary?”
Sunghoon slumped in his chair, covering his face with his hands. “I’m doomed.”
Minji snickered. “On the bright side, you’ll be working closely with a future CEO. That’s a huge career boost.”
“I don’t care about the career boost. I care about the fact that I went on a date with him last night, acted like a complete idiot, and now I have to see him every day.”
Minji blinked, processing his words. “Wait, bitch? you had a Date wih him?" minji whisper-yelled
“Yup,” Sunghoon muttered. “And it was a disaster.”
Minji snorted. “Well, you’re not dead yet, so maybe it wasn’t as bad as you think.”
Sunghoon glared at her. “I talked about cats being government spies. I think it was pretty bad.”
Before Minji could respond, Sunghoon’s phone buzzed on his desk. It was an email from his boss, confirming his new role as Heeseung’s secretary starting the following week.
Sunghoon’s stomach churned. There’s no getting out of this, is there?
As if the universe hadn’t tormented him enough, another email notification popped up—this time, it was from Heeseung.
SUBJECT: WELCOME TO THE TEAM!
Looking forward to working with you. Let’s meet tomorrow to discuss everything. Best, Heeseung.
Sunghoon groaned, collapsing onto his desk. “Why me?”
