I couldn't believe that Leo and I were going on a fancy date tonight. He was taking me to the Aquarium: one of the bougiest restaurants in Oak Falls. I knew he was making good money from working with the FBI, but I didn't think he was making Aquarium money.
Tonight, we were celebrating our five-and-a-half-year anniversary. It was a few weeks late with him being away, but I didn't mind. I was happy to spend any time with Leo that I could.
I got dressed up in a nice maternity dress and did my hair, since the restaurant had a formalwear policy. If you weren't dressed nice enough, they'd turn you away. This place was that fancy. I felt like a spoiled princess. Leo was the one who got me the dress from a luxury maternity clothing line. It even had pockets!
Today, we weren't just celebrating a milestone in our relationship, but we were celebrating Leo finally getting his license! He was afraid to take his road test for quite a while because he was scared to parallel park. He failed the test three times, but finally passed earlier this week. Now I didn't have to be the one driving us everywhere.
I waited outside, taking in a chilly fall breeze in one of the rocking chairs on the porch with Grammy. She didn't do much gardening anymore, but she oversaw when Aunt Linda did. She knew what to plant and where to put it, and Aunt Linda, Luna, or myself (obviously, when I wasn't carrying four babies) did all the dirty work.
"I love it when it's mum season," she said, rocking in the chair next to me. "Do you think I made the wrong choice, changing it up this year?"
"Not at all, Grammy! The pink and purple mums look great! The yellow and orange ones we usually do are nice, but it's fun to do different colors," I said.
She chuckled. "I think I'll go back to the usual colors next year, if I'm around."
"Oh, stop it! Of course you'll be here next year!" I said.
I looked up and saw Leo's new black Tesla pulling into the driveway and beamed with joy. To me, there was nothing like a guy who cared about saving the planet. He got out and opened the door of the passenger's side, where he pulled out a massive bouquet.
My mouth almost dropped to the ground. As high school kids without jobs or only working at church camps during the summer, flowers weren't really a thing we did.
"Oh Leo, you shouldn't have!" I said, taking the big bouquet of daisies. I was allergic to roses.
"Oh, I definitely did," he said, giving me a kiss on the forehead. Even though they were at odds, he was always so respectful to Grammy. He gave her a nice smile. "Hi Grammy! Feeling ready for your birthday party next weekend?"
"Not really," she said.
"Hey, come on, Grammy! It'll be lots of fun!" I said.
She sighed. "I don't need a party every year, Sunny Sunshine."
"Yes you do! You're worth it!" I said, linking arms with Leo. "Shall we?"
"We shall."
I handed the flowers to Grammy so she could bring them inside and put them in a nice vae for me. Leo opened the door of the car and helped me up. He even had a special seat belt extender for me, which I couldn't believe that I already needed.
"I missed you so much," I said.
"I know. I missed you too. Hopefully we'll be done soon," Leo said as we pulled out of the driveway.
It was hard when he was away sometimes, but I knew it was for a good cause. Plus, with the money he was making, I didn't have to get a part time job. I volunteered to anyway, but he told me not to worry, just to rest and get ready for these babies, who were getting more active by the day.
When we got to the Aquarium, Leo opened the door for me and helped me out of the car, like a true gentleman. We walked into the restaurant and the hostess greeted us.
"Cavelli, party of two," he said.
"Right this way," she said.
The hostess walked us through the dining room and got a small table right next to the fish tank. There were four separate tanks, each the size of the entire wall of the room. It truly felt like you were dining under the sea.
"I'm guessing this place is fancy enough that you can't just order fish sticks?" I asked.
Leo and I had a big laugh, then looked over the menu. He chose the crab legs, but myself and the boys were feeling a little more adventurous, so I ordered the special, which was swordfish. I'd never had it before, but it felt like the babies were begging me to get it. I told Leo I was squeamish about ordering a special that was eighty dollars, but he insisted that it was fine. What a sweetheart.
While we waited for our food, I could see that something was different about Leo. It was something I hadn't seen before in my mushy, sweet, quiet, anxious boyfriend. Leo was cool as a cucumber, but there was also something dark about him. Something mysterious.
"How come Ella didn't follow us here?" I asked.
"Because you're with me. That's all the protection you need," Leo said, with much more confidence than I'd ever seen.
I really liked it. My hormones were all over the place, and this dark Leo was really a turn-on. I took a breath. Even with my big belly, I could practically jump across the table to him. He chuckled.
"You see the way I'm looking at you, huh?" I asked, lowering my voice. "You're so...different. But I like it."
"I guess it's just part of the character I'm playing at Rancho Cucamonga." He shrugged. "I'm deep in it. I'm not just on the sidelines anymore. I'm really with the members of the church out there."
"Members of the church" was the code word for whatever members of the Cavelli mafia Leo was infiltrating. It was like my favorite stories of the internet were coming to life right before my eyes. Leo was literally my mafia boyfriend. And as long as no one close to us was getting hurt. I was loving it.
I rubbed my baby bump as my boys wiggled around, right as the server brought us our dinner. I was never a big fan of cooked fish. I'd eat sushi, but never something like this. Pregnancy was really silly like that.
The swordfish was totally delicious, and I couldn't be happier. I had my baby boys, I great meal in a fancy restaurant, and my super hot mafia boyfriend. What more could I ask for? Well, chocolate cake, I guess. Better check out the dessert menu.
