“Because I was present there that night!” Vidyut shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as he fought to prove Mandira's innocence.

Yuvraj's narrowed in disbelief, “Are you lying to save her?” His voice was low, but it carried an edge of accusation.

Vidyut let out a frustrated sigh, trying to steady himself. “That night I was there to pick Purab. He was still busy with work so I wandered around the campus. I was never ready to admit it but I've liked Mandira since the day I saw her. That night I saw her sitting by the window of her hostel room and reading a book. I watched for a while when I heard a scream and found out that Vini had fallen off a building,” he took a pause and continued, “Mandira was right in front of my eyes when the accident happened.”

Yuvraj shook his head, refusing to believe. “Maybe she hired someone to do it,” Yuvraj argued, throwing away the cigarette he was smoking earlier.

Vidyut met his gaze, his expression thoughtful. “If she were to hire someone then she would have made sure Vini dies.”

Yuvraj scoffed, unconvinced. “So you want to say someone else pushed Vini off the building?”

“Yes,” Vidyut affirmed.

“Who?” Yuvraj asked.

“Someone close to Mandira. You said she bribed the doctor to tamper with the evidence. She must have done that to protect that person.”

“Who can be that close to her?” Yuvraj’s tone was thick with skepticism.

“Devika, of course." Vidyut said without hesitation. "She is the only close friend Mandira has. And they went to the same university.”

Yuvraj laughed bitterly, “Vidyut, be serious! Devika might be YOUR wife's best friend but she can't hurt someone.”

“What if she is pretending to be a Cinderella to gain everyone's sympathy?” Vidyut asked with narrowed eyes.

Yuvraj snapped, “You have lost your mind! She can't hurt anyone even if her life depends on it.”

Vidyut's jaw clenched, “Oh, are you in denial now? That you targeted the wrong person? Your misunderstanding have tangled my life in worst way possible.”

“The blame goes to your dear wife too,” Yuvraj scoffed.

“Whatever. Don't come near Mandira ever again,” He warned him.

Yuvraj shot him a hard look, “You should also stay away from Devika. And keep it in your mind, Devika can never hurt anyone.”

Vidyut walked away without saying a word.

Vidyut opened the door of his bedroom as silently as possible to not disturb Mandira's sleep. He got rid of his Kurta and laid down beside his wife.

“Where did you go?” Mandira's voice startled him. He wasn't expecting her to be awake.

“Why are you awake?” He asked while wrapping his arms around her.

“I think my body is getting used to sleeping in your arms,” Mandira said with a lazy smile and rested her head against his bare chest. The warmth of his body immediately began lulling her to sleep.

“Aren't you curious you dared to shoot you in this much tight security?” He asked out of blue while caressing her bandaged wound.

Mandira let out a sigh, “I am. Vikram Bhaiya said someone from the inside is involved. I wonder why someone will shoot me.”
