"CALLIE, WAKE UP!" My twin brother, Alex, screams in my face. I shoot up while head-butting my twin. "Oww," My brother drags out. I glare at him as I pick my phone up from the table beside my bed to look at the time.
"Oh my god, you're so dumb." I close my eyes and take a deep breath. "Alex," I say calmly.
"Callie," he says, tilting his head, a habit we both have when we're confused.
"IT'S TWO IN THE MORNING AND MY DUMB ASS BROTHER DECIDES TO SCREAM IN MY FACE," I yell, half asleep. If you couldn't tell, I am NOT a morning person.
"I just wanted to tell you about Gabi's home." He says with a playful pout.
"Really?" I question with excitement as I jump out of bed. He nods, he watches me with a smile as I run downstairs to look for my big sister. I go to the living room when she's not there. I run to the kitchen. As I saw her, I immediately jumped into her arms.
Gabi wraps her arms around me tightly and smiles. "Hey, kiddo." Gabi is mine and Alex's older sister. Even though there's a 4-year gap, we've always been close, especially after Mom passed. We pull apart, and we have the biggest smiles on our faces. "What are you doing at home?" Gabi is always working, so Alex and I can stay with her and Caleb and not go to live with Dad.
Four years ago, when Alex and I were about to turn 12, our mom died due to COVID-19. Our dad was destroyed; he couldn't live without Mom. So, he turned to drugs and alcohol to help him cope. At that time, Gabi was in college. So it was only me, Alex, and Dad at the house. Alex and I tried to help Dad, we tried to stop his addictions, but he was too far gone and too addicted.
He started hitting me and Alex. After 2 years of abuse, Gabi came home and saw him hit us. He always favored Gabi. She had a boyfriend of 5 years. He said we could stay as long as we paid him rent. Ever since she got us out, we haven't thought about going back... Until now..
As soon as I say that, Gabi's smile drops. "Oh, I-uh, I got fired," she says quietly, looking at the ground, playing with her hands.
I freeze, and I can't move. "Wait, what.. What happened?" I say worried. Her voice is breaking, and her eyes are watering. Alex and I look at each other quickly and turn back to Gabi to see her sobbing. We ran to comfort her. We all know what's going to happen when Caleb finds out she got fired.
"I-I'm so..so sorry guys," She says quietly, but we heard her.
"Shhh, it's okay, Gabi. Don't apologize for something you can't help," I say with my eyes watering, but I do not dare let the tears fall. She can't see that I'm scared, or she will feel even worse.
