It was another ordinary afternoon at the university cafeteria. Kim Yooyeon sat across from Yoon Seoyeon, her best friend of three years, gently poking at her salad while Seoyeon demolished a bowl of ramen. The bustling sounds of students chatting, utensils clinking, and trays clattering filled the air, but the two friends were wrapped in their own little world.
"Yooyeon, seriously," Seoyeon said between slurps, "how do you survive on that? It's just lettuce and a few tomatoes."
Yooyeon smiled softly, her pale white skin practically glowing under the fluorescent lights. "It's... healthier," she said, shrugging nonchalantly. "Besides, I'm not that hungry."
Seoyeon tilted her head, squinting suspiciously at Yooyeon. "You're always not hungry. Sometimes I wonder if you even eat at all."
Yooyeon chuckled lightly, twirling a piece of lettuce on her fork. "You know I have weird eating habits."
"That's an understatement," Seoyeon muttered. "Your face is so pale, too. Are you sure you're not sick? You look like you haven't seen the sun in years."
Yooyeon's smile faltered for a brief moment before she quickly regained her composure. "It's just genetics. I've told you before."
Seoyeon narrowed her eyes, feeling like Yooyeon was hiding something, but she didn't press further. Not yet, at least. They had been friends for three years, and while Yooyeon had always been a little mysterious, Seoyeon trusted her. If there was something more to her paleness, Yooyeon would tell her eventually... right?
"Anyway," Seoyeon continued, changing the subject, "are you ready for the finals next week? I feel like my brain's going to explode with all the studying."
Yooyeon nodded, her eyes softening as she looked at Seoyeon. "I think you'll do great. You always manage to pull through, even when you're stressed."
"Ha! That's because of all the late-night cramming sessions," Seoyeon said, laughing. "Speaking of which, I might need another one tonight. You in?"
Yooyeon hesitated for a second. "I'll try. I might need to head out early, though."
"You always do," Seoyeon teased, rolling her eyes. "But fine, I'll take what I can get."
They continued chatting, the usual light banter between friends. Seoyeon noticed, as she often did, how Yooyeon's pale face remained calm and composed no matter what they talked about. But beneath that calm, Seoyeon always felt like there was something more, something Yooyeon wasn't telling her.
Later that night, Seoyeon found herself pacing her dorm room, restless from hours of studying. It was nearing 2 AM, and her head felt like it was going to burst. "I need some fresh air," she muttered to herself, grabbing a hoodie and heading out.
The nearby park was quiet, bathed in moonlight. Seoyeon took a deep breath, feeling the cool night breeze against her skin. It helped clear her mind, if only for a moment.
As she walked deeper into the park, something caught her attention—a shadowy figure crouched by a tree. Curious and a little concerned, she stepped closer, squinting to get a better look. Her heart nearly stopped when she realized what she was seeing.
Yooyeon.
She was holding a chicken, its neck clutched in her hand, and blood... blood was dripping from it. Yooyeon's lips were pressed against the animal's neck, her eyes glowing faintly in the dark.
"What the—Yooyeon?!" Seoyeon's voice trembled as she called out, her body frozen in shock.
Yooyeon's head snapped up, her eyes widening in horror as she dropped the chicken, the blood still staining her lips. "Seoyeon... it's not what it looks like," she stammered, taking a step back.
