The shuttle's engines whined as it descended through the cloud-filled skies of Korath, a planet renowned for its beauty and prosperity. They were landing in the capital city of Kaltis. Kiera could see the sprawling landscapes below, a patchwork of gleaming cities interwoven with lush green forests and vibrant rivers at the very heart of Vandor's Reach. It was hard to believe that a world so beautiful was teetering on the edge of war.
The shuttle touched down with a soft thud as it settled into the bustling spaceport. Outside, Kiera could already see the activity of Korath, ships of all shapes and sizes were arriving and departing, cargo being loaded and unloaded by teams of workers moving swiftly. It was clear the trade on Korath never stopped.
As Kiera disembarked, her soldiers marched behind her with Jax at the front. A group of Korathian guards approached. They wore heavy set armor, delicate and prestigious patterns decorating the trim. Jax, turned ordering three of his men to stay behind with the ship. The captain of the guard stepped forward, a stern yet polite expression on his face. "Welcome to Korath. The king is expecting you. We will escort you to the palace."
Kiera nodded, following closely behind him. Jax fell in step beside her, his hand resting near his blaster though the unease was clear, Kiera had warned him to keep his weapons holstered for now. Tensions were high, and the last thing they needed was to draw attention with unnecessary uses of force.
As they moved through the spaceport and toward the city, the sights and sounds of Korath filled their senses. The streets widened into a grand avenue that cut through a sprawling marketplace, alive with color and activity. Merchants from all corners of the galaxy were showing off their wares, shouting over the din of voices. Stalls were overflowing with exotic goods: shimmering fabrics, rare spices, glistening jewelry, and handcrafted trinkets. The air smelled of sizzling food from street vendors, mixing with the scent of fresh flowers that lined the market paths.
Kiera's eyes lingered on a stall where a merchant was demonstrating small, hovering droids, luxuries most worlds in the system could not afford. Another vendor was selling handcrafted weapons, their blades glowing faintly with blue light, though the guard presence ensured they remained sheathed. It was clear Korath was not just prosperous, it was thriving on the wealth brought in by trade.
Yet, beneath the surface, there was a tension that Kiera could feel. She noticed how some of the citizens cast nervous glances at the guards patrolling the streets. There was a sharpness in the air, a sense of unease that hinted at the unrest lurking just beneath the planet's vibrant exterior. Even as merchants bartered and children laughed, the shadow of the conflict between Korath and Dasturn was ever-present.
As they passed through the market, Kiera's attention was drawn to a small crowd gathering near the edge of a plaza. A street performer, dressed in bright colors, was spinning in the air on floating platforms, his acrobatics mesmerizing the audience. But even here, Kiera could feel the underlying fear in the people's thoughts. Rumors of war had reached every corner of this world.
Jax, ever observant, leaned in and spoke in a low voice. "It looks like a paradise, but the tension here is thicker than it seems. These people are afraid."
Kiera nodded slightly. "There's more going on than we see. Stay vigilant."
Amidst the chaos, a small child burst into view, darting through the crowd like a comet. With a quick motion, he snatched a bright red piece of fruit from a vendor's stall. He giggled, the sound pure and joyous, as he dashed away, leaving the vendor in stunned silence.
"Hey! Come back here!" the vendor yelled, his face reddening with outrage. The man, a burly figure with a thick mustache, shook his fist in the air, spluttering complaints as he watched the child vanish into the throng. "That was mine! You little thief!"
Kiera paused, a fleeting smile tugging at her lips as she watched the scene unfold. In that moment, the child embodied innocence, a reminder of what life could be playful, free, unburdened by the complexities of the world. But the vendor's furious shout snapped her back to reality.
Jax, walking beside her, shook his head with a smirk, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "That kid has guts. Reminds me of myself when I was his age," he remarked, glancing at Kiera. His laughter echoed in the air, lightening the tension around them.
Eventually, the bustling market gave way to the grandeur of Kaltis's palace. The streets widened into a massive courtyard leading up to towering gates adorned with intricate carvings, depicting the planet's long history and its rulers. Guards stood at attention, their expressions serious as they watched the Jedi and her team approach.
The captain of the guard turned to Kiera as they reached the base of the palace steps. "Your soldiers must remain here," he said, gesturing to Jax and the rest of her crew. "King Corvak only requested you. The rest are not permitted inside the council chamber for now. It is for the safety of the king."
Jax's brow furrowed, he opened his mouth to protest but Kiera rested a calming hand on his shoulder.
"It's alright," Kiera said softly. "We're here as diplomats." She glanced at the captain. "I trust your guards will ensure everyone's safety inside."
The captain gave a curt nod. "You have my word."
Jax hesitated for a moment, then gave a begrudging nod, signaling for the rest of the crew to stand down. Kiera gave him a reassuring look before stepping forward. She ascended the palace steps, feeling the weight of her mission pressing down on her shoulders. The ornate doors of the palace loomed ahead, their grandeur a testament to Korath's power.
The captain led Kiera through the entrance, and the world outside faded as the cool air of the palace enveloped her. Inside, the palace was no less breathtaking than the city. The walls were adorned with tapestries and sculptures, golden chandeliers hanging from high ceilings. But even in this opulent setting, Kiera's senses remained alert.
The guards escorted her down a long hallway toward the king's council chamber, the weight of the world outside slowly falling away. The conflict brewing in Vandor's Reach was far more than a political struggle, it was a test of her abilities, both as a Jedi and as a diplomat. And as she neared the king's chamber, she couldn't shake the feeling that something darker was waiting for her just beyond the next door.
