Reality

I like to watch planes,
imagining who's on-board.

to watch people grocery shopping, pretending I know their weekend plans.

I watch when people think no one's looking,
to see their hidden smiles and adoring eyes.

When a car zooms by twenty over the limit,
I can't help but wonder if their family is alright, and if the driver needs a listening ear.

If my life were different,
if I was born one room to the right,
would I be with these people I see?

If my mother had married a different man,
If my fate was just slightly different,
maybe I'd be the one the speeding car was rushing so desperately to.

I wonder how life would be if I wasn't where I am now,
so I treat everyone as if they were me in a different reality.
Different situations, different lives,
but what if they were all me?
