Gideon's POV
I stare up at the sky as i trace the constellations. Julian turns to me "Your still awake? It's really late, you should go to sleep". "This is Cassiopeia, my favorite" i say as i draw it in the firmament. He glances at where i was looking and smiles "Hey those group of stars look like two dogs humping each other". I gape at him and what ever came out of my mouth sounded more like a combination of a snort and a chortle instead of a laugh.
"So...You're a little bit of a star gazer aren't you" he says. "Yeah, my dad was an astronomer so i guess i just spent a lot of time looking at stars and learning about them" i sigh. "Oh god, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said anything," Julian stammers, looking guilty. I wave him off, trying to smile. "No, it's okay. It's just... it's been a long time, you know? I was too young to really understand what I lost back then". "He was a great person, Gideon" Julian says with a hint of a smile.
"He was, wasn't he". My father was a well known man, He did awesome things and was also an exceptional parental figure. My most favorite memory of us was when i was sick and had typhoid but even then he slept next to me on my bed even though he was exhausted from work and tells me all about this new book that he started reading on astrology. He also got sick the next day and my mom tutted over our doltishness. But I remember the moment like it was just yesterday I was cuddling up to my dad with snot leaking down my nose and ruining his favorite blue t-shirt.
I realised that Julian had fallen asleep and i stared at him. He has a little bit of freckles diffused all over his nose. I wanted to reach over and trace them like the constellations that i drew in the sky but i turn my body to the other side and close my eyes hoping to fall asleep. I lie there a moment longer wondering what he's dreaming about. After a while, I feel my eyes droop and I slowly go into a deep sleep.
I wake up to the sounds of birds chittering and everyone standing near Constance's tent. I get up and wince at the pain in my eyes from the glare of the sun. I jog up to them to see what all the commotion is about. I find a huge slash in the middle of the huge tent staring right at me. "Damn what animal visited you Constance"? i ask. "Ugh now i have to buy a new one" she says woefully.
We start our trek back to our houses and walk down the muddy track, the scent of damp soil hanging in the air with Constance persistently grumbling about her "poor precious tent that dint deserve what it got". At one point Tarini gets so fed up and tells Constance that she'll buy her a new tent if she just stops complaining. After that she shuts up and Tarini smiles gleefully as we continue our trail.
We stop for small water breaks and to sit because someone decided to get two freaking suitcases on a night trip. "So, How was the overnight camping guys"? Tadj looks over at all of us. I smile at Julian and say "It was good Tadj". Julian smiles back at me happily.
Once we reach we part ways and i delightedly rushed back to my apartment and threw the door open jumping onto my couch. I mean as much as i like camping i like the comfort of sitting all day in my room and watching T.V. even more. I have gone camping like a million times as a kid with my dad so i'm not really complaining. We live in freaking Brattleboro, everyone loves outdoor stuff like this.
I hear a ringing sound from my rotary phone as i drag my feet towards the tabletop as i pick up the call. "Hey" Julian said. "Hey" i say back. "I just called to say hi and i wanted to ask if you would like to come over to eat pizza with me, Tadj and Jodie at his house" he says. I agree and hang up the call. Now i only have like half an hour to get ready and cycle to Tadj's house.
I walk into the house to see them sitting on the couch laughing. Jodie waves cheerily at me "Hey Gideon! Long time no see". "Yeah glad to see that you and Tadj still wear matching outfits together" i say. Jodie laughs heartily while Tadj ducks his head embarrassed. They were wearing an ensemble of red with white polka dots.
I take a seat next to Julian and wave meekly at him. We all watch the new movie that everyone has been raving about this past year it's called Psycho. At one point we all scream at the shower scene and end up tightly clinging to one another. I bashfully remove my death grip from Julian's arm and he coughs turning away from me.
For the rest of the movie all i could think about was how soft Julian's arms felt. And that was weird be i've never thought about something like that so i moved on and tried to think about how good the cheesy pizza tasted.
After the movie was done Jodie turned towards us "Alright, let's play Truth or Dare". We all groan because we know how this game works and how it usually ends up with daring people to do something like kiss or prank-call someone, and the last time I played this game, was with Julian and it didn't really end that well, so i'm not really looking forward to this. "Truth or Dare, Julian" Jodie inquires. "Dare" he replies. Jodie dares him to call someone he likes and tell them that he has a crush on them. At that moment i don't know why but i felt my heart get heavy.
Julian blushes as he walks towards the rotary phone and calls a number. When he dialed the number, my heart thudded in a fast paced manner in my chest. "Hi" he says into the phone. "Um, i just wanted to tell you that umm, I kinda maybe like you", he then quickly hangs up the phone before the person on the other end could respond and turns to us with both his hands glued to the back of a chair visibly gulping in front of us with his eyes wide looking like he regretted even thinking of playing the game. "Who was it"? Jodie asks.
"Ashby Benson..."
