DEAREST GENTLE READER, humankind has accomplished extraordinary feats in its attempt to compete with nature. Built ships to travel the globe, castles nearly to the clouds, and now, great balloons to traverse the skies. But no matter how many accomplishments our debutantes have displayed for Queen Charlotte, it seems Her Majesty is interested in only one. And though other young ladies may scramble for Miss Francesca's leftovers, they would be wise to remember the higher one flies, the further one has to fall.
Eloise likes to shelter herself behind the notion that her friendship with Cressida Cowper had not been an act of vengeance but rather of compassion. She likes reminding herself that, despite it not being her initial intention, she had found a good friend in the blonde— being able to understand her better as well as the causes for her cruelty. She had been desperate, desperate to find another person to accompany her through the forests of the marriage mart, no longer wanting Penelope and feeling betrayed by Siena's own forged friendships. But that is not to say Eloise does not draw the line at unnecessary evilness.
The information about Colin helping Penelope had never been meant to be shared with a malicious intention. Eloise had merely forgotten that Cressida is not, in fact, her ginger friend or her brunette curls she has never had to filter her mouth with. For a moment, she had let herself get carried away by having someone to vent to and the fact had slipped, leading to the mayhem that had sealed the night off with an unpleasant bow.
After that night, Cressida had gone back to being the villain Eloise had always thought her to be. She resented her for sharing what she'd confided her with, hated her for ever thinking she could surpass what Penelope ever meant to her. But after confronting her and realizing that the blonde had not, in fact, been the culprit of the rumor, Eloise had become the true villain in her own story. Thoughts had begun to float inside her head. Has she been pointing fingers too recklessly? Has she been projecting her own insecurities onto someone else?
After all, it is one thing to hear it from Penelope or Siena, who share a joint dislike towards the blonde, but hearing it from Cressida herself had to meant something. '...perhaps you should like to find a looking glass rather than looking at me' she'd said, which had left her in shambles.
