Sarah fidgeted on the edge of the bed, her gaze darting to the clock on the wall.
It was almost lunchtime.
The rigid schedule of this place was etched into her very being.
Breakfast at precisely nine, lunch at six-thirty, and dinner at three-thirty in the morning.
A cruel, unnatural rhythm that dictated their lives, a constant reminder of the powerlessness they endured.
The thought of the bathroom duty gnawed at her.
She had been assigned the morning and evening shifts today, but her pregnancy had granted her a temporary reprieve.
Once the baby arrived, though, she would be back to scrubbing the grime, her duties extended until eight months after the birth.
The unfairness of it all, the relentless grind, the constant fear of punishment for the slightest transgression, it all weighed heavily on her.
She pushed herself up, her body aching with a weariness that went beyond the physical.
She needed something, anything, to break the monotony, to soothe the gnawing anxiety.
John, her husband, always managed to sneak into the kitchen for a piece of fruit, a small act of defiance against the suffocating rules.
She hoped to find something similar in the drawer, a crumb of comfort in this desolate place.
But instead of a fruit, her fingers brushed against something cold and hard.
A Gun.
Her heart hammered in her chest, a frantic rhythm that mirrored the world outside.
It was a solution, a way out, a way to escape the relentless cycle of fear and oppression.
She raised the gun.
Pointing it in her very head, it's weight heavy in her hand, the cold metal a stark contrast to the warmth of her skin.
Her finger, trembling slightly, hovered over the trigger.
One pull, one swift movement, and the pain would end.
The fear, the exhaustion, the endless struggle… all gone.
But then, a sudden, gentle kick from within her womb jolted her back to reality.
The baby, her child, her reason for enduring this torment, was still there, alive and kicking.
Her hand, instinctively, moved to her swollen belly, her fingers tracing the outline of the tiny life within.
The gun, suddenly heavy and cold, felt alien in her grasp.
