Ch. 4: The Endless Straddling

My attempt to pick the cat off my lap was futile. I glance up at Adriel once more, not knowing what to say or do. Another man rushes next to him and then towards me. He pauses to see who I was and then looks at Adriel. He brings his hands closer towards me and attempts to take the cat from my lap, "Here she is!"

Were they selling the cat? It did make sense. It was a female so they'd obviously call it a 'her' and 'she'. She could have a brother, too. I mentally facepalm and feel a tug on my shirt. The cat wasn't letting go. Adriel starts to speak, "Give him the money for both and get out of here." A few murmurs saying 'yes boss' can be heard and I watch as the man who was trying to take the cat stops and leaves. Adriel starts making his way down the stairs. I look down, trying to hide my face.

It was dark upstairs and the light was only coming from downstairs. Surely he hasn't seen my face yet. I pet the cat out of nervousness and wait for Adriel to say something. He doesn't stop when he reaches me, he goes further. He had gone down even though he knew a stranger was here. I found it strange and I hold the cat in my arms as I turn my head.

I was met with the same grey eyes that I used to look at in high school. They were the same ones that would be looking at me when he'd rest his head on the desk. He smirks and all of a sudden, I feel a pinch in my neck.

Adriel POV

I watch as his body goes limp in a matter of seconds. I catch him before he could fall and lift him up. The cat finally jumps off his lap and follows me as I lead him up a few set of stairs and to the highest floor. Looking at the man in my arms, I can't help but kiss his forehead which was slightly covered by his thin bangs.

His soft hair brushes against my lips and I smile with my lips against his forehead. As I carry him up the stairs, I take in his features. The once bubbly and kiddish-looking high schooler changed. He still looked fresh-faced but obviously older than our school days. His hair was dyed from blonde to a dark, dirty blonde. It was messy, yet soft. I recall him telling me stories about how he hated his hair. Whenever he'd go out when it's windy, it'd get brittle and dry. Because of that, he'd always carry around a hat for whenever he had to go outside.

I look at the rest of him. He was never a big fan of working out in high school, yet now he looked pretty well-built. He'd also gotten much taller over the few years. I liked how short and cute he was back then, but I liked this strong and beautiful version of him more. I set him down on one of the beds we keep on the top floor of the warehouse. His shirt had gotten up while I was laying him down and I see a gun in his waistband.

I smirk slightly and walk closer. I had something to confirm. I reach into his pocket and take out his badge. It read 'Police' and his name along with picture. I was surprised to see it said 'Commander'. I glance back at him and put the badge back into his pocket. I lower his shirt so his stomach and gun was covered.

Taking a seat at a nearby couch, I wait for him to wake up.

I tap my foot, thinking of what to say when he wakes up. Obviously he's going to reach for his gun first. I left it with him on purpose, to see if he'd really aim it at me or not. If he remembers who I am, he wouldn't.

Monte POV

The room felt extremely hot. I could feel the sweat dripping down my forehead and neck and I start to open my eyes. Once I can see slightly, I try to sit up but the sudden pain in my neck held me back from doing so. My eyes adjust to the light in the room and I realize I'm laying down on something soft and comfy.

I finally sit up and feel something poke me. It was my gun. Across from the bed I was sitting on, I see a figure standing at the door. I squint, trying to see who it was and reach for my gun in my waistband. I look around for my radio to call for backup, but the figure standing at the door starts to walk closer. It was Adriel holding my radio. With a smirk, he holds it out for me to take. I hear familiar voices, "Deputy, we can't reach Commander Soren."
