Michael admired Max's sleek sports car as he mounted his bike.
The car's polished exterior gleamed in the sunlight, and Michael couldn't help but think it was pretty cool.
He revved his bike and sped off, leaving the house behind.
Inside the kitchen, Lucy was busy preparing dinner when Max entered, catching her by surprise.
"Hello," Max greeted with a smile.
Lucy jumped slightly. "Is it okay for the guest to see the food before dinner?" Max asked, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
"You're thinking of the groom not seeing the bride before the wedding," Lucy corrected, laughing.
"Oh, right. I always get those two confused," Max replied, following her into the dining room.
The table was set beautifully, and Lucy placed a basket of bread on it.
Max came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and nuzzling her neck.
She turned her face to his, and just as Max was about to kiss her, they were interrupted.
"Mom..." Sam's voice cut through the moment.
Max and Lucy turned to see Sam standing there with Edgar and Alan, the Frog Brothers, beside him.
"These are my dinner guests. Edgar and Alan. The Frog Brothers," Sam announced.
Lucy, thrown off guard, stammered, "Ah... I didn't know you were having guests..."
"Well, if we're in your way, we can just eat peanut butter out of the jar in the kitchen," Sam offered.
"No, no... there's plenty for everybody," Lucy assured them. "Oh, Max, this is Sam... and the Frog Brothers..."
She looked them over strangely, but Sam and the Frogs only had eyes for Max.
Everyone was seated around the dinner table. Edgar and Alan focused intently on Max's behavior as Lucy served spaghetti from a large plate.
"This looks terrific, Lucy," Max complimented.
"Boy! Somebody around here sure has bad breath!" Lucy exclaimed, causing the boys to look directly at Max. But Lucy was referring to Nanook, who was panting nearby.
"Nanook, stop breathin' on me," Lucy scolded.
"C'mere, Nanook," Sam called, and the dog trotted over to him. The Frogs exchanged disappointed expressions.
Sam pointed to Max's large plate of spaghetti. "How about a little Parmesan cheese on that?"
"Okay, Sam. Thanks," Max replied, taking the container and sprinkling some grated cheese onto his spaghetti. Sam and the Frogs exchanged a conspiratorial look.
Max took a mouthful of spaghetti and nearly spat it out. "Max! What's wrong?" Lucy asked, concerned.
"It's garlic!! I like garlic, but..." Max sputtered.
"Quick—drink some water!" Sam urged, intentionally spilling a glass of water onto Max's lap.
"Hey! Easy!" Max exclaimed, jumping from his seat and trying to mop up the spill with his napkin.
"Does it burn?" Sam asked, eyes wide with anticipation.
"Burn?? Are you kidding? It's freezing!" Max replied, bewildered.
"Max, I'm so sorry," Lucy apologized.
Then, very casually, Edgar leaned back in his chair and flipped off the lights. The room went dark.
