The cafe space was still a blank canvas, the walls a muted beige that whispered of countless possibilities. As I stood there, absorbing the quiet promise of what could be, a soft, melodic chime echoed through the room. It was like the sound of a bell that heralds new beginnings, drawing my attention to the source. There, standing in the doorway, was a woman whose vibrant presence immediately filled the empty space with a lively energy.
She had a striking bob cut, her dark hair falling just below her chin, and her bright eyes were alight with curiosity and warmth. She looked to be in her late twenties, her outfit a mix of contemporary chic and vintage flair, which suggested a creative soul with a passion for style.
"Hi there!" she greeted, her voice as warm and inviting as a cup of freshly brewed coffee. "I'm Nova Aurora. I own the clothing shop next door. I couldn't resist coming over to introduce myself and welcome you to the neighborhood."
A flutter of nerves danced in my stomach. Meeting new people always made me a bit anxious, though I wasn't a total introvert. It was always a challenge to put myself out there, especially when I was still finding my footing in this new town. I managed to return her smile, hoping it conveyed the excitement I was feeling.
"Hi, Nova! I'm Lia Bennett. It's so nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too, Lia," Nova replied, her eyes sweeping the room with curiosity, a spark of interest lighting up her expression. "So, you're the one who rented this place? What are you planning to do with it?"
Her warmth and openness felt like a breath of fresh air, instantly easing some of the tension I hadn't realized I was carrying. It was comforting to meet someone so friendly and genuinely curious.
"Yes, I am," I said, excitement creeping into my voice. "I'm going to open a book cafe. It's been a dream of mine for years—a cozy little spot where people can relax with a good book and enjoy some great coffee."
Nova's face lit up, her enthusiasm matching my own. "That sounds amazing! This place definitely needs some work, but I can already picture it—the perfect vibe for a cafe like yours."
Her words of encouragement felt like a warm embrace, a reassuring pat on the back that fueled my optimism. I was eager to dive into the renovations, but Nova's genuine interest in my plans was equally heartening.
"What about you, Nova?" I asked, curious to learn more about her and her shop. "How long have you been here?"
"I moved back to Seabrook about a year ago," she said, her voice laced with nostalgia. "I was abroad for ten years, studying fashion design. When I came back, I knew I wanted to open my own store in the town where I grew up. But this shop has been closed for over five years, so I'm thrilled to have you as a neighbor."
Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she spoke, and I could feel her genuine passion for the town and her shop. But something in her tone made me want to dig a little deeper. "And the previous owner?" I asked, trying to sound casual. "What kind of shop did they run?"
Nova's expression faltered slightly, the enthusiasm dimming. "Oh, her name was Selene. She ran an ice cream shop here."
There was something in the way she said it—an almost imperceptible hesitation. I could feel it, like there was more beneath the surface.
"What happened to her?" I asked gently, feeling like I was stepping into sensitive territory but unable to let the question go.
Nova sighed softly, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Selene passed away... in a car accident. It was... tragic." Her words were quiet, as if speaking them any louder might unravel something.
