Sunday dawns with a crispness that feels invigorating. The sun casts a golden hue over Seabrook, promising a day full of potential. Iris, Nova, and I make our way to the church, the warm community atmosphere a welcome contrast to the busy days we've been having. As we enter, the familiar scent of incense mingles with the sound of soft hymns, wrapping the space in a comforting embrace.
Seated in the pews, I take a moment to reflect. I offer a silent prayer of gratitude for the support I've received and the chance to create something truly special with the cafe. It's a peaceful, grounding moment before the day's activities unfold.
Ethan arrives just as the service is about to begin. His entrance is understated—dark jeans and a crisp white shirt—but he somehow manages to command attention. The air subtly shifts as he moves with a casual confidence that is both striking and a bit enigmatic. He takes a seat in the same row as me, though he's clearly engrossed in his own thoughts, barely acknowledging the surroundings or the people near him.
The service begins, and the priest's sermon on Mark 12:30-31—"Love your neighbor as yourself"—and his humor immediately sets a light-hearted tone. "Today's message is about love," he starts, a twinkle in his eye. "You know, loving your neighbor isn't just about sharing a cup of sugar. It's about offering them the whole cake—even if you're not sure they like chocolate. Or, in my case, it's about sharing my last piece of pie, even though I know it's my absolute favorite!"
A ripple of laughter spreads through the congregation. His playful take on love and community is refreshing, and I can't help but chuckle at his antics. He continues, "Imagine this: love is not just about holding the door open for someone. It's about holding it open even when you're running late for a meeting and have to awkwardly stand there, juggling your coffee and phone, all while the person you're holding the door for seems oblivious to your struggle!"
The laughter continues, and I find myself enjoying the service more than I expected. I can't help but think of Nova and Ethan. To my right, Nova's warm, easy-going presence is a delight, and I find it effortless to love her as a friend. To my left, however, Ethan's distant demeanor makes me wonder how on earth one could break through the wall of reserve he has around me and truly connect.

As the service concludes, the congregation is invited to partake in some fun bonding activities. The announcement is met with a mix of eagerness and excuses—some citing work, others claiming prior commitments. However, to my surprise, Ethan stays behind, adding to my curiosity about him.
The games begin, and the atmosphere shifts to one of lively excitement. Teams are quickly formed, and it's clear that Ethan's team is the one everyone wants to join. As people shuffle around, eager to secure their spot on Ethan's side, murmurs of admiration and anticipation ripple through the crowd.
"I'm definitely on Ethan's team," one woman declares confidently, "He's a game-changer!"
"Yeah, he knows the Bible inside out," another adds with a chuckle. "No way we're losing with him on board."
Ethan stands at the center of the commotion, his smile widening as he takes in the enthusiasm around him. There's an easy charm in his demeanor now that's captivating. I catch myself watching him intently, marveling at how different he seems from the reserved, aloof man I've seen. His smile is warm and genuine, lighting up his face in a way that makes his eyes crinkle at the corners. It's a smile that radiates confidence and friendliness, making him appear approachable and even more magnetic.
The quiz-master clears his throat, drawing the room's attention. "Alright, let's get serious! First round—Bible trivia!"
The room buzzes with anticipation. My team exchanges nervous glances. Bible trivia? Great, I think. Ethan's team already has an advantage.
