The soft glow of the moon illuminated the path along the beach, casting long shadows on the sand as Adeline walked, her bare feet sinking into the cool, damp ground. The night was quiet, the only sounds being the gentle crash of the waves and the distant calls of seagulls. It was her ritual, these nightly walks. The sea always brought her solace, calming her thoughts and helping her feel less alone. But tonight, her mind was anything but calm.
Ever since the old man had threatened her, every step felt heavier. His words haunted her. The mention of her parents lingered in her mind like a ghost she couldn't shake. But even with all that turmoil, there was one thought that outshined the rest—Keith. The distant, mysterious Keith, with his secrets and his cold demeanor, had taken up more space in her heart than she liked to admit.
Adeline glanced up at the moon, its light reflecting off the gentle waves. She sighed, her breath visible in the chilly night air. As much as she tried to forget, every night she hoped—hoped to see him, to somehow get closer to the truth about who he was and why he kept pushing her away. She wanted answers, but more than that, she wanted to understand him.
As she rounded the bend of the shoreline, her heart skipped a beat. There he was—Keith, standing just a few feet away, gazing out at the horizon. His silhouette was framed by the moonlight, his shoulders tense, as if he was carrying the weight of the world on them. His hair blew in the night wind, wild and untamed, much like the emotions that always seemed to swirl just beneath the surface of his calm exterior.
For a moment, Adeline hesitated. She had seen him like this so many times—silent, distant, untouchable. But tonight felt different. There was something in the way he stood, a kind of vulnerability she hadn't seen before. Her heart swelled with a mixture of hope and nervousness.
"Keith?" she called out softly, her voice almost lost to the wind.
He didn't turn immediately. His hands were buried deep in the pockets of his jacket, and his gaze remained fixed on the dark waves. But after a moment, he shifted, his green eyes meeting hers. There was a flicker of something in his expression—relief? Guilt? It was hard to tell.
"You shouldn't be here," he said, his voice low, almost a whisper.
Adeline's chest tightened at his words, but she forced a smile. "I could say the same to you. But here we are."
Keith let out a soft breath, something that might have been a laugh if he weren't so tense. He glanced back at the horizon, his jaw clenched as if he were battling some inner turmoil. Adeline stepped closer, her eyes never leaving his face.
"Look," she began, her tone softer now, "I know you've been trying to push me away. I get it. You've got your reasons. But can we... can we just talk? No more of this weird tension. Just... talk."
Keith hesitated, his fingers twitching slightly in his pockets. For a moment, it looked like he might refuse, but then, to Adeline's surprise, he nodded. "We can talk," he said quietly, his gaze flicking to the sand. "But that's it. Anything more... it's dangerous. Too dangerous."
Adeline's brow furrowed. "Dangerous? Keith, what are you talking about? You're acting like you're some kind of... I don't know... gang leader or something."
At that, Keith's lips twitched, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Adeline saw the hint of a smile. "Gang leader?" he echoed, his voice carrying a note of amusement. "Is that what you think?"
"Well, you're all secretive and broody. You dress like you're hiding something, and you've got this whole 'I-can't-get-close-to-anyone' vibe going on. What else am I supposed to think?" she teased, trying to lighten the mood.
Keith shook his head, the smile fading as quickly as it had appeared. "You have no idea, Adeline. It's not like that. It's... worse."
"Worse?" Adeline's heart sank. "Keith, what is going on? Why do you keep saying it's dangerous? What are you so afraid of?"
Keith's eyes darkened, his expression tightening. "I can't explain it," he said, his voice rough. "I want to. I really do. But... it's complicated. I don't even know where to start."
Adeline took another step closer, close enough now to see the turmoil in his eyes. "Keith," she said softly, "I'm not asking for much. I just want to understand. You keep pushing me away, but I'm not going anywhere. You don't have to carry whatever this is alone."
Keith's jaw clenched again, and for a moment, it looked like he might back away, retreat into his usual cold distance. But then, something shifted in his expression. A crack in the armor. He turned to fully face her, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"You have no idea how much I want to let you in," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "But if I do... everything changes. You don't know the risks, Adeline. I'm... I'm not like you. I'm not someone you can get close to. Not safely."
Adeline's heart ached at the vulnerability in his words. "You don't have to protect me," she said, her voice steady. "I'm stronger than you think. Whatever you're dealing with, we can figure it out together."
Keith shook his head, his expression pained. "No. You don't understand. One mistake, one touch... and it's all over. For both of us."
"One touch?" Adeline frowned. "Keith, what are you talking about?"
Keith hesitated, his hands clenched into fists in his pockets. He looked like he was fighting a battle within himself, torn between wanting to tell her the truth and keeping her safe from whatever dark secret he was holding. Finally, he took a step back, putting more distance between them.
"I can't," he muttered. "I can't explain it. You just... you have to trust me. Please, Adeline. If you care about me at all, you'll stay away."
Adeline felt a sharp pang in her chest, but she refused to let him see her hurt. Instead, she forced a laugh, though it sounded hollow even to her own ears. "So, what? You're some kind of cursed prince, and if I get too close, I'll turn into a pumpkin?"
Keith didn't laugh. His eyes were haunted, filled with a sadness that Adeline didn't fully understand. "It's not a joke, Adeline."
"I know," she whispered, her voice softening. "I'm just... I'm trying to understand. You keep saying it's dangerous, but you won't tell me why. I don't know what to do, Keith. I care about you, but you won't let me in."
Keith closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping slightly. "I care about you too," he admitted, his voice rough with emotion. "That's why I can't let you get any closer. If anything happens to you because of me... I couldn't live with myself."
Adeline's heart skipped a beat at his words. He cared. He actually cared. But the wall he had built around himself was still firmly in place, and no matter how much she wanted to break through, she knew he wasn't ready.
"Okay," she said quietly. "I'll back off. For now. But just know that I'm not giving up on you, Keith. Whatever it is you're dealing with... I'll be here when you're ready to talk."
Keith looked at her, his eyes filled with a mix of gratitude and regret. "You shouldn't wait for me, Adeline. It's not fair to you."
Adeline smiled softly, though her heart felt heavy. "Life isn't fair, Keith. But sometimes... sometimes it's worth the risk."
Keith didn't respond. He just stood there, watching her with that same haunted expression, as if he wanted to say more but couldn't bring himself to. After a long, tense moment, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows of the night.
Adeline stood there, staring after him, her heart aching with a mix of hope and frustration. She had gotten closer to him tonight than ever before, but it still wasn't enough. He was still hiding, still afraid to let her in.
But she wasn't giving up. Not yet.
As she turned and began walking back toward her house, the moonlight casting a soft glow on the waves beside her, she couldn't help but feel a small glimmer of hope. Keith had opened up, even just a little. And that was enough to keep her going.
For now.
