Keith couldn't wait any longer. He had to act. The hourglass pulsed with energy in his hand, the sandstorm within it swirling faster, growing more unstable with every second. He had only one more chance to set things right.
He took a deep breath, preparing to turn the hourglass one final time. His hands trembled as he held it, knowing this was it. There was no going back from this decision. He could feel the weight of the universe pressing down on him, as if warning him of the consequences that awaited.
But then, a voice cut through the tension, soft but clear.
"Keith."
He froze. Turning slowly, he saw Adeline standing at the edge of the clearing, her black-and-white dog Oreo at her side. She looked at him with a mixture of confusion and fear, her eyes wide as if she had stumbled into something she wasn't meant to see.
"Adeline," he breathed, his heart sinking.
She stepped closer, her gaze flicking between him and the hourglass in his hand. "What are you doing?" Her voice wavered, but there was a steeliness beneath the fear, a determination that reminded him of her father.
Keith's grip tightened around the hourglass. He couldn't let her get involved. Not now. "You shouldn't be here, Adeline. It's too dangerous."
Her brows furrowed. "Dangerous? Keith, I don't understand. You're keeping so many secrets, and I don't even know where to start. I just... I want to help."
He shook his head. "You can't help. Not with this. It's bigger than both of us."
"Then why do you look like you're about to tear the world apart?" she asked, stepping even closer. "What's going on?"
Keith could feel the panic rising. The old man's threats echoed in his mind, and he knew if Adeline got any closer, it could trigger the end of everything. He had to protect her, even if that meant pushing her away.
"I'm trying to save you," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "But I don't know if I can."
Adeline's expression softened, and for a moment, the weight of the universe lifted, if only slightly. "Keith, you don't have to do this alone."
"I do." His voice cracked. "Because if I don't, you'll die. And I can't let that happen."
The air around them seemed to thicken, the energy from the hourglass vibrating with intensity. Keith could feel time slipping through his fingers, the last grains of sand preparing to fall. This was his final chance, and he couldn't waste it.
"Adeline," he said, his voice filled with anguish. "If you trust me, you'll leave. Now."
Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't move. "I trust you, Keith. But I'm not leaving."
Keith's heart ached as he realized what he had to do. He couldn't let her stay, not when everything was on the line. He turned the hourglass, feeling the surge of power as time began to warp around him.
And just as the world started to fade, he whispered, "I'm sorry."
Adeline's scream echoed in the distance as time folded in on itself, pulling Keith away from the present and hurtling him back into the past, to the moment where everything had begun.
But Keith knew that no matter what happened next, the consequences would be unimaginable.
