The year was 2000, and Keith found himself standing in the heart of the Monroe laboratory. It looked just as he had remembered from his childhood memories—sterile, clinical, with cold, white lights reflecting off metallic surfaces. The faint hum of machines filled the air, and the scent of chemicals lingered in the corners of the room. Keith's heart raced as he adjusted the glasses perched on his nose and tugged the mask tighter around his face. He had to stay hidden. The last thing he needed was Dr. Gareth or Dr. Eleanor Monroe recognizing him.
He couldn't believe he was here—back in the past, just moments before the infamous experiment that had changed everything. He had disguised himself as another scientist, hoping his resemblance to his father wouldn't be noticed. If Dr. Gareth or Eleanor realized who he was, it could set off a chain of events far worse than he could imagine.
Keith's breath came in shallow gasps as he scanned the room. His hands were trembling, but he clenched them into fists to steady himself. He couldn't afford to panic now. He had one goal: stop the experiment, convince the Monroes of the dangers they didn't fully comprehend, and prevent the catastrophe that would destroy everything.
He spotted Dr. Gareth first—his towering figure looming over a set of complex machinery. He was barking orders to the other scientists, his deep voice echoing through the lab. Beside him stood Dr. Eleanor Monroe, her sharp, calculating eyes fixed on a screen displaying endless streams of data. They were so focused, so immersed in their work, that Keith wondered if they even realized the enormity of what they were about to do.
Keith cleared his throat, his voice disguised by the mask. "Excuse me, Dr. Monroe?" His voice wavered slightly as he addressed Gareth.
Dr. Gareth turned, his piercing eyes narrowing as he studied Keith's masked face. "Who are you? I don't recognize you."
"I'm... Dr. Stevens," Keith said, his heart racing. He forced his voice to remain calm, professional. "I've been brought in for additional consultation. I've been studying temporal mechanics for years, and I was asked to review your data. I believe there's something you may have missed."
Gareth raised an eyebrow, suspicion flickering in his eyes. He crossed his arms, staring down at Keith with a mixture of annoyance and curiosity. "And what exactly do you think we've missed, Dr. Stevens?"
Keith swallowed hard, trying to keep his voice steady. "Your calculations on temporal elasticity—there's an error. If you proceed with the experiment, the ripple effects on the space-time continuum will be catastrophic. You're not just altering time, you're distorting reality itself. If you don't stop now, you could destabilize the entire timeline."
For a moment, the room fell silent. Dr. Eleanor turned, her sharp gaze fixated on Keith. She exchanged a look with Gareth, her brows furrowing in doubt.
Gareth scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. "Do you think we haven't considered the risks, Doctor? We've accounted for every variable. The possibility of failure is negligible."
Keith's stomach twisted. He could feel the tension rising, the weight of every second pressing down on him. "You're wrong," Keith said, stepping forward, his voice rising. "You're trying to manipulate forces beyond your control. I've seen the data. I've run the simulations. If you continue, there will be irreversible damage. You'll tear apart the very fabric of time."
Dr. Eleanor's expression darkened, her voice cold and cutting. "What are you suggesting? That we abandon everything? Years of work—decades of research—thrown away because you think there's a mistake?"
Keith met her gaze, his heart pounding in his chest. "I know how important this is to you. I know what you're trying to achieve. But there's a bigger picture here. You can't risk everything for the sake of one experiment."
Dr. Gareth's eyes narrowed dangerously. "And what would you know about it, Doctor? You talk as if you understand the risks we're taking. But you don't know the stakes. You don't know what's at play here."
Keith swallowed hard, struggling to keep his emotions in check. He could feel the weight of the secret he was hiding—the knowledge that he was speaking not just as a scientist, but as someone who had lived through the consequences of this very moment. "I've seen what happens when people try to play with time. It never ends well."
Dr. Gareth let out a low, mocking laugh. "Bravo, Doctor. Truly, bravo. Your passion is admirable. But I'm afraid you're mistaken. You see, you've just given me the final piece I needed."
Keith's blood ran cold. He could see the shift in Gareth's eyes, the gleam of something darker—something far more dangerous than he had anticipated.
"What are you talking about?" Keith asked, his voice shaking.
Dr. Gareth's smile widened, a twisted, malicious grin that sent chills down Keith's spine. "You pointed out a mistake in the experiment—something we hadn't accounted for. But now that I know about it, I can adjust the calculations. You've just handed me the key to perfection."
Keith's heart sank. No. This wasn't supposed to happen. He had come here to stop the experiment, to prevent the disaster. But instead, he had made it worse.
"You don't understand," Keith said, his voice trembling. "If you go through with this—if you fix the mistake—you'll make the experiment even more dangerous. You'll unleash something far worse than you can imagine."
Dr. Eleanor stepped forward, her expression hard. "What are you saying? That we should abandon the experiment entirely? Let all our work go to waste?"
Keith's mind raced. He could see the determination in their eyes, the unwillingness to let go of their ambition. They were too close—too driven by their desire to succeed. They wouldn't listen to reason.
"Dr. Monroe," Keith said, desperation creeping into his voice. "There's more at stake here than your research. This experiment could cost you everything. Your lives. Your daughter's future. The entire world as we know it."
For a brief moment, Eleanor hesitated. Keith saw a flicker of doubt in her eyes, a small crack in her resolve. But then Gareth spoke, his voice cold and final.
"You don't know what you're talking about, boy," Gareth sneered. "We've sacrificed too much to turn back now. The experiment will proceed as planned. And if you think you can stop us, you're sorely mistaken."
Keith's heart pounded in his chest. He could feel time slipping away, the moment of no return rapidly approaching. He had to stop them. He had to find a way to convince them before it was too late.
"You're making a mistake," Keith said, his voice urgent. "This isn't just about time. There's something else—something you're not telling me. What's your real plan, Gareth? What are you really trying to achieve?"
Gareth's smile faded, replaced by a cold, calculating expression. "You're smarter than you look, Doctor. But that's where your intelligence ends. You don't understand the true potential of this experiment. The power it can unlock. The control it can give us over the very fabric of existence."
Keith's blood ran cold. He had suspected there was more to the experiment, but he hadn't realized just how deep Gareth's ambitions ran. This wasn't just about saving lives—it was about control. About playing god with time itself.
"You're insane," Keith whispered, his voice shaking. "You're going to destroy everything."
Gareth's eyes gleamed with a dangerous light. "On the contrary, Doctor. I'm going to create something far greater than you can imagine. And there's nothing you can do to stop me."
Keith's mind raced as the room spun around him. He had failed. He had come here to stop the experiment, but instead, he had handed Gareth the final piece of the puzzle. And now, the world was on the brink of destruction.
But it wasn't over yet. Keith wasn't going to give up. Not now.
He took a deep breath, his hands trembling as he reached into his pocket, fingers brushing against the cold, smooth surface of the hourglass. He had one last chance.
Time was running out.
