It had been a year.
A whole, lonely year since you last saw Ahyeon. Since that day, when you closed the door on your best friend, your other half, the person who knew you better than anyone else. It wasn't something you ever wanted to do, but the task card gave you no choice.
Day after day, the weight of the choice you made sat heavy in your heart. There was an emptiness that never seemed to go away, no matter how much you tried to move on. You kept reminding yourself that you had to live, and doing what the card said was the only way. You hoped that Ahyeon was doing fine, even though you knew she had been hurt too. But still, that decision haunted you, always lingering in your thoughts, making you question if you really did the right thing.
Today was your nineteenth birthday. You woke up with dread, knowing you'd be getting another card. You didn't want to face another task. You were terrified of what it might make you do this time. What if it asked something even worse? You didn't know if your heart could handle it.
Suddenly, your doorbell rang. The sound echoed through the quiet apartment, sending a chill down your spine. You slowly got up, your hands trembling as you approached the door. You opened it, and there it was — another card lying on your doormat.
You bent down to pick it up, hesitating for a moment before turning it over. You took a deep breath and read the message:
"Go back to her. She needs you."
You blinked, reading the words again and again, as if trying to make sure they were real. Your heart pounded in your chest. It felt like a thousand thoughts raced through your mind all at once. Ahyeon needed you. You didn't know what happened, but if she needed you, you were going to her — no matter what.
Without a second thought, you grabbed your keys, threw on your shoes, and ran out the door. The cool air hit your face, but you barely felt it as you ran down the street, your breaths coming fast. You had to see her. You had to know that she was okay.
Please let her be okay, you kept thinking. Your legs ached as you pushed yourself harder, the thought of Ahyeon driving you forward. When you reached her building, you rushed up the stairs, taking two steps at a time. You stopped at her door, pounding on it.
You waited, but there was nothing — no footsteps, no voice, only silence.
You tried the doorknob, and it turned. It was unlocked. You pushed the door open, and stepped inside. The apartment was eerily quiet, the air heavy with a sense of emptiness. You could feel something was wrong.
You made your way to her bedroom, fear growing inside you with each step. You pushed open the door, and your heart dropped.
Ahyeon was lying on the floor, her body still, her skin pale. You ran over to her, dropping to your knees beside her.
"UNNIE!" you called, your voice breaking. You lifted her head gently, placing it on your lap. She was breathing, but it was shallow, and her face was pale, her lips almost colorless. Her sleeves were stained with blood. Tears filled your eyes as panic washed over you.
"Stay with me, unnie. Please," you whispered, your voice trembling as you fumbled for your phone. You dialed emergency services, your hands shaking as you spoke, your words hurried and desperate.
"Please, I need help. My friend — she's hurt. Please hurry," you managed to say, giving them her address. The operator assured you help was on the way, but each second felt like an eternity. You brushed a few strands of her hair away from her face, your tears falling freely now.
"I'm so sorry, unnie," you whispered. "I should have been here. I should have never left you."
You looked around, trying to understand why she was like this. That's when you saw it — a card lying on the floor beside her, partially hidden under some scattered papers. You reached over and picked it up, turning it over.
"Hurt yourself or hurt her."
The words made your stomach churn, a wave of nausea washing over you. Tears blurred your vision as you looked back at Ahyeon. She had been given a choice — and she chose to hurt herself rather than hurt you. She suffered so you wouldn't have to.
The thought was unbearable, your heart breaking into a thousand pieces. The weight of what she had gone through alone crushed you. She needed you, but you weren't there. You promised yourself right there, that you would never leave her again.
The sound of sirens grew louder, and within moments, the paramedics were at the door. You stepped back, giving them space as they moved quickly, lifting Ahyeon onto a stretcher. You followed them outside, your heart pounding, not wanting to be apart from her even for a second.
You rode with her in the ambulance, holding her hand, whispering to her that everything would be okay, that she wasn't alone anymore. You squeezed her hand gently, feeling her fingers twitch slightly in response, and it gave you hope.
When they arrived at the hospital, they rushed her into the emergency room, and you were told to wait outside. You sat in the waiting room, your legs bouncing nervously, your heart heavy with worry. The minutes ticked by, each one feeling longer than the last. You replayed every moment from the past year, the loneliness you felt, the regret.
If only you had known how much she was struggling too. If only you could have been there for her, like she needed you to be. Tears filled your eyes again as you realized just how much you both had suffered alone, all because of those cards.
After what felt like forever, a doctor finally approached you. You stood up quickly, your hands trembling.
"She's going to be okay," the doctor said, and those words felt like a lifeline. Relief washed over you, tears slipping down your cheeks as you thanked them over and over.
They allowed you to see her once she was stable. You walked into the room, your steps slow, almost afraid. She was lying in bed, her face still pale, but her breathing steady. You pulled a chair close to her bed, sitting down and taking her hand gently in yours.
You squeezed her hand, your eyes welling up as you spoke softly, your voice breaking.
"I'm so sorry, Ahyeon. I should have never left you. I thought I was doing the right thing, but I was so wrong. I promise I'm not going anywhere again," you said, your voice filled with emotion.
You looked at her face, seeing the gentle rise and fall of her chest. You stayed there, not wanting to let go of her hand. You stayed through the night, your head resting on the edge of the bed as you watched over her.
The next morning, you felt a slight movement, her fingers twitching in your hand. You lifted your head, seeing her eyes slowly flutter open. She looked at you, her eyes tired but filled with something you hadn't seen in a long time.
"Y/N?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
You smiled through your tears, nodding as you leaned closer.
"Yeah, it's me," you said softly, squeezing her hand gently. "I'm here. I'm not leaving."
She looked at you for a long moment, her eyes glistening with tears. She tried to speak, but her voice cracked, and instead, tears began to fall.
You wiped them away gently, your own tears falling too.
"It's okay," you whispered, your voice breaking. "We're okay now. We'll be okay."
She nodded slowly, her lips curling into a small, tired smile. And for the first time in a year, you felt something lift from your heart. The emptiness that had been there was starting to fill again, piece by piece.
You stayed by her side, holding her hand, knowing that this time, you wouldn't let go.
