Isabel's breath came in shallow gasps as she stumbled into the light, her legs barely holding her up. She blinked against the sudden brightness, her eyes adjusting to the change from the oppressive darkness of the hallway. For a brief moment, everything was silent, the world eerily still.
She found herself standing in an empty classroom. Desks were neatly arranged in rows, the whiteboard at the front of the room still covered in half-erased notes from an earlier lecture. The harsh fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting an almost sterile glow across the room. It was so normal—so out of place after the nightmare she had just experienced.
She took a few tentative steps forward, her heart still racing, her mind struggling to process everything. Had she really escaped? Was she finally safe?
The voices that had called her name earlier were gone, swallowed by the quiet of the empty school building. Isabel's throat tightened as she realized just how alone she still was. There was no one here to help her—no one who had found her after all. The sense of relief that had flooded her moments ago began to fade, replaced by a creeping unease.
She turned back toward the door she had just come through, half-expecting to see Martius standing there, his dark eyes watching her. But the hallway beyond was empty, the door slightly ajar, the same as she had left it. No trace of him, no sign of the nightmare she had barely escaped.
Her hands trembled as she closed the door behind her, sealing off the strange, dark hallway. She leaned against it, her heart still pounding in her chest, the adrenaline from her escape slowly ebbing away. For a moment, she allowed herself to close her eyes, to breathe. She needed to think, to understand what had just happened.
How had she ended up in that dark hallway? How had Martius known so much about her? And where had he gone?
As she stood there, a terrible thought began to worm its way into her mind. Was it really over? Or had this all just been the beginning, like Martius had said?
The sound of footsteps echoed faintly in the distance, jolting her out of her thoughts. They were light, deliberate, but growing closer. Panic surged through her again as her eyes darted to the door, her mind racing.
Was it him? Had Martius somehow followed her through?
She stepped away from the door, backing further into the classroom, her gaze locked on the handle as the footsteps grew louder. Her breathing quickened, fear coiling tightly in her chest.
And then the door swung open.
Isabel froze, her entire body tensing, ready to flee again. But it wasn't Martius.
A figure stepped into the classroom, the overhead lights casting long shadows across the floor. It was a girl, her hair tied in a messy ponytail, wearing the same nursing uniform as Isabel. She looked startled, her eyes wide with concern as she spotted Isabel standing frozen in the middle of the room.
"Isabel?" the girl asked cautiously, her voice soft, but it echoed in the stillness of the room. It was Miya Saldego, a fellow student from Isabel's nursing class. The sight of her familiar face sent a wave of relief crashing over Isabel, though the tension in her body didn't fully dissipate.
Miya's expression was a mix of confusion and worry as she took a step closer. "What are you doing here? I've been looking for you—everyone has. Are you okay?"
Isabel opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. How could she explain what had just happened? How could she put into words the terror she had just experienced? The dark hallway, Martius, the feeling of being hunted—it all seemed too unreal to say out loud.
"I... I don't know," Isabel finally managed to whisper, her voice shaking. "I don't know what just happened."
Miya's brow furrowed as she stepped closer, her eyes scanning Isabel's face. "You look like you've seen a ghost. What's going on?"
Isabel shook her head, her hands trembling as she wrapped her arms around herself. "There was this guy... I don't know who he is. He followed me. He—he knew things about me, Miya. Things I never told anyone."
Miya's eyes widened, concern deepening. "What guy? Who are you talking about?"
"He said his name was Martius," Isabel continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I've never seen him before. He... he appeared on the rooftop, and then I tried to run, but I ended up in this dark hallway, and he followed me. I don't know how I got out."
Miya's face paled. "The rooftop? Isabel, that area's been closed off for weeks. No one's supposed to be up there."
Isabel blinked, confusion mixing with her fear. "What? No, I was just there. The door wasn't locked. I—"
Miya shook her head. "No, Isabel. They've been doing renovations. The entire floor is off-limits. It's locked. No one's supposed to be up there."
Isabel's stomach twisted as Miya's words sank in. The rooftop... locked? How was that possible? She had gone up there earlier that evening, hadn't she? The door had been unlocked. Martius had found her there.
Had she imagined it?
No, she was sure of it. She had felt the cold wind, seen the sunset. She had been there. But now doubt began to creep in. The darkness, the endless hallway—it didn't make sense. None of it made sense.
Miya stepped closer, her hand gently resting on Isabel's arm. "Come on, let's get you out of here. You look like you need to rest."
Isabel nodded numbly, letting Miya guide her toward the door. Her mind was still racing, her heart pounding with lingering fear. She wanted to believe Miya, to trust that this was all just some horrible dream, but deep down, she knew it wasn't that simple.
As they left the classroom and walked down the familiar corridors of the school, Isabel couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right. The bright lights and normalcy of the campus felt too distant, too far removed from the nightmare she had just endured.
Miya talked quietly as they walked, but Isabel barely registered her words. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Martius—the way he had known her name, the way he had appeared out of nowhere, and the way his voice had echoed through that dark, endless hallway.
"You were always meant to find me... And now that you have, there's no going back."
The words haunted her, replaying in her mind over and over again. What had Martius meant by that? Who was he really? And why had he chosen her?
Isabel's pulse quickened as they reached the exit of the building. Just as Miya opened the door to the outside, Isabel hesitated, glancing back down the long, empty hallway behind them. The shadows seemed longer now, darker. The building felt colder, more oppressive, as if something was still watching her from the darkness.
Miya tugged her gently, leading her out into the cool night air. "Come on, Isabel. Let's get you home."
Isabel followed, but the uneasy feeling in her gut remained. She glanced over her shoulder one last time, her heart pounding, half-expecting to see Martius standing there, watching her from the shadows.
But the hallway was empty.
For now.
