Chapter 6: Echoes of fear
Renjun gently tossed off his blanket and slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb Donghyuck. He tiptoed to the door, opening it silently, and stepped into the hallway.
The dimly lit corridor was quiet, the only sound the soft hum of the air conditioner. Renjun made his way to the stairs, his bare feet making barely a whisper on the steps.
He reached the rooftop terrace, the cool night air enveloping him. The city skyline twinkled below, a canvas of stars above.
Renjun leaned against the railing, his eyes lost in thought. Jaemin's face floated in his mind, a mix of concern and longing.
(Renjun)Jaemin, where are you? Why can't you come back?
Renjun's whispered words dissolved into the night.
(Renjun)Six years... it's been six years since you vanished.
His eyes dropped, guilt and regret washing over him.Renjun's thoughts swirled in self-blame.
Renjun recalled tracking Jaemin's phone to his company, assuming he was safe.
(Renjun)But you never came back. I don't want to lose you.
Renjun's voice cracked.
*Flashback*
Renjun, Jaemin, and Haechan, strolled through the vibrant streets of Seoul, laughing and joking together.
(Haechan) I'm starving! Let's grab some tteokbokki!
(Jaemin) But we just ate lunch!
(Haechan) That was hours ago! I'm wasting away!
Renjun chuckled.
(Renjun) You're always hungry, chanie.
(Haechan) That's because I'm growing silly!
Jaemin playfully rolled his eyes.
(Jaemin) You're already taller than us.
The trio settled into a street food stall, indulging in spicy tteokbokki and sweet hotteok.
As they ate, jaemin began teasing Renjun about his cooking skills.
(Jaemin) Renjun, your kimchi stew is still the worst.
(Renjun) Hey! My cooking's improved!
(Jaemin) Yeah, from terrible to mediocre.
Renjun playfully shoved Jaemin.
(Renjun) You're just jealous!
(Haechan) Don't tease my boyfie Nana.
The afternoon sun cast a warm glow over their laughter-filled moments.
Later, as they walked along the Han River, haechan turned towards them.
(Haechan) Guys, promise me we'll always be there for each other.
(Jaemin) Of course, haechanie.
(Renjun) Hmm, Forever.
The three friends shared a heartfelt hug, sealing their promise.
*Flashback Ends*
Renjun's eyes tear up, memories of Haechan's bright smile and Jaemin's gentle laughter lingering and there failed promise.
