The weeks following their night at the lookout point were filled with a familiar routine—classes, work, and moments stolen in between when they could be together. Yet, as comfortable as life was becoming for Jimin and Jungkook, the inevitable challenges that life always brought began to creep back into their world. It all started with a simple email.
Jimin was sitting in his university library, diligently working on his latest project, when a notification popped up on his screen. It was from his professor, titled “Opportunity Abroad.” His curiosity piqued, Jimin clicked on the message.
As his eyes skimmed through the words, his heart began to race. The university was offering a scholarship program for an exclusive semester abroad in Paris, fully funded. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for any art student, with access to some of the best museums, galleries, and art institutions in the world. The chance to study under renowned professors, to live in a city filled with inspiration—Paris, the city of dreams.
But there was a catch. The program started in just two months and would require him to live in Paris for an entire semester—six months away from home, away from Jungkook.
Jimin sat back in his chair, his mind swirling. The thought of being in Paris was exhilarating, but at the same time, the idea of being away from Jungkook for that long weighed heavily on him. They had never been apart for more than a few days since they had started dating, and the idea of being on the other side of the world, oceans apart, was daunting.
Jimin bit his lip, staring at the email. He wanted this—he really did. But he also knew that leaving Jungkook, even for a few months, wasn’t going to be easy.
That evening, Jimin met up with Jungkook as usual. They had planned a simple dinner at their favorite small restaurant near campus. As they sat down, Jimin tried to act normal, but the weight of the decision hung over him like a cloud.
Jungkook, always attuned to Jimin’s emotions, noticed almost immediately. “Hey,” he said, leaning forward slightly. “What’s up? You’ve been quiet all day.”
Jimin glanced up at him, feeling his stomach knot. He knew he had to tell Jungkook about the email, but a part of him feared what Jungkook’s reaction would be. Would he be upset? Disappointed?
Taking a deep breath, Jimin finally spoke. “I got an email from my professor today.”
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Yeah? What about?”
Jimin swallowed, pushing the words out before he could second-guess himself. “It’s about a scholarship program… in Paris.”
Jungkook blinked, the words clearly catching him off guard. “Paris?”
Jimin nodded. “Yeah. It’s a semester abroad program for art students. It’s a really big deal, and they’re only choosing a few students to go. It would be for four months.”
The silence that followed felt heavy. Jungkook stared at Jimin for a moment, processing the information. His jaw clenched slightly, but he didn’t say anything right away.
Jimin, feeling the tension, hurried to continue. “I haven’t decided yet. I mean, it’s an amazing opportunity, but… six months is a long time, and I don’t want to—”
“Don’t want to what?” Jungkook interrupted, his voice calm but edged with something Jimin couldn’t quite place.
Jimin hesitated. “I don’t want to leave you.”
Jungkook exhaled slowly, leaning back in his chair. He ran a hand through his hair, clearly trying to collect his thoughts. “Jimin, this is a huge opportunity for you. You’ve always talked about wanting to study abroad, and now you have the chance. Why would you even think about turning it down?”
Jimin felt a pang of guilt at Jungkook’s words. “Because I don’t want to be away from you for that long. I don’t know if I can.”
Jungkook’s expression softened slightly, though there was still a shadow of something in his eyes. “I get that. But… this is Paris, Jimin. I can’t be the reason you don’t take this chance.”
Jimin looked down at the table, feeling conflicted. “It’s not just about you, though. I want this, but I also want us. I don’t know if I can balance both.”
Jungkook reached across the table, taking Jimin’s hand in his. His touch was warm, reassuring. “We can handle it. I know it’s going to be tough, but we’ve been through a lot already. We’ll get through this too.”
Jimin’s heart ached at Jungkook’s words. He knew Jungkook was right—they had faced challenges before and come out stronger. But this felt different. This wasn’t a fight or a misunderstanding. This was distance—real, physical distance.
“Are you sure?” Jimin asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “Are you sure we can do this?”
Jungkook’s grip on Jimin’s hand tightened slightly. “I’m sure. I won’t lie—it’s going to suck being apart. But we’re not just any couple, Jimin. We’re strong, and I’m not going anywhere just because you’re in another country for a few months.”
Jimin felt a swell of emotion in his chest. He had always known that Jungkook was supportive, but hearing him say it like this, so confidently, filled Jimin with a sense of reassurance he hadn’t expected.
“Okay,” Jimin said softly. “I’ll apply.”
Jungkook smiled, his thumb gently brushing the back of Jimin’s hand. “Good. I’m proud of you.”
