The journey to Skye's court was both physically exhausting and emotionally taxing, with both of them walking a fine line between duty and the strained tension of their recent interactions. They arrived several days before the anniversary party, allowing Skye some time to reintegrate into the political landscape she had been away from for so long. As they entered her lands, Azriel took in the sprawling expanse of Skye's court. The stone structures bore intricate designs carved by artisans long past, and the sweeping hills and rivers that wove through the landscape seemed almost enchanted, shimmering with a subtle glow.

The carriage rolled to a halt at the main estate, a towering edifice that stood as a testament to her family's power and legacy. As they disembarked, Skye's father, Lord Valen, greeted them with a warm smile, pulling his daughter into an embrace. Azriel observed the tenderness in the gesture and the way Skye's stance softened, if only for a moment. Valen released Skye and turned to Azriel, who inclined his head in a gesture of respect.

"So, Azriel, my daughter's new... companion." Lord Valen's eyes sparkled with curiosity. Azriel met his gaze evenly.

"Just a friend, my Lord. I'm here to support Skye during her stay."

Valen's expression shifted, a hint of amusement flickering across his features. "I'm sure you'll be more than just 'support,' Azriel." His voice held a knowing edge that made Skye's cheeks flush. She quickly changed the subject, taking Azriel by the arm and leading him through the grand doors and into the sprawling hallways she had known since childhood.

As they walked through the estate, Skye offered him glimpses into her life before the responsibilities of court and power had come crashing down. She showed him her childhood wing, pointing out the nooks and alcoves where she used to hide with her favorite books, as well as the grand library with shelves that towered toward the ceiling.

"This place is incredible," Azriel said quietly, trailing a hand along the polished wood banister.

Skye glanced at him, her expression thoughtful. "It can be, but it can also feel like a cage. Especially when everyone is watching, waiting to see what move you'll make next."

They continued their tour, their conversations interspersed with moments of silence. The gravity of her situation weighed on both of them, a constant reminder of the complex and dangerous world she was navigating. As they moved into the main courtyard, several court officials approached, their gazes flicking between Skye and Azriel.

One official, an older man with a keen eye and a sharp smile, inclined his head. "Welcome back, my Lady. I see you've brought a... friend."

Skye's smile was cool and controlled. "Yes, Azriel will be staying with me during my visit. I trust there won't be any issues with that?"

The official hesitated only briefly before nodding. "Of course not, my Lady. We'll see to his accommodations immediately."

Azriel kept his expression neutral, sensing the scrutiny of everyone around them. He could practically feel the undercurrents of suspicion and curiosity, as if each court member were assessing him for hidden motives. He took Skye's arm again, a subtle but effective move that he hoped would keep them from prying too closely.

Later, as they strolled through the gardens, he turned to her. "It's not going to be easy, is it? Pretending that I'm just a friend here for companionship."

She sighed, looking out over the flowers and manicured hedges. "No, but it's necessary. If they knew the true nature of your role, they might become defensive. I need them to think that I'm in control, that I don't require protection."

"Even if you do?" he asked softly, watching her carefully.

She looked away, a shadow crossing her face. "Especially if I do."
