"Shopping for school supplies, par-tay." Lorelai said sarcastically as she and the twins walked towards Doose's market.
Rory rolled her eyes, "Nobody demanded that you come."
"Are you kidding? How often do you get to do things like this?" she said as they walked into the store, "I was thinking, while we're going crazy, we should get some toilet paper and a plunger next."
"We can just do this later, mom." Tori shrugged with a laugh.
"No, I'm teasing. Come on you two, get that list of yours."
"Okay," Rory pulled the girls supplies list from her pocket, "We need legal pads,"
"Got it." Lorelai responded grabbing a basket.
"Tons of pens,"
"Right."
Tori chimed in grabbing her own basket,, "Some number 2 pencils, three highlighters each, erasers, a staple remover, and two folders."
"You need 3 highlighters each?" Their mother asked, lifting an eyebrow quizzically.
"Yes." Rory responded.
"Three?"
Tori sighed and repeated, "Yes."
"That's a very random number."
"Three is not a random number." The eldest twin shook her head.
"No but I mean how did you get to the number 3?" Lorelai questioned, confused.
"One dries up," Tori listed.
"One gets lost," Rory added.
"We have one left." Tori finished.
"God it's like I'm living in the shinning." The eldest Gilmore muttered, shaking her head, "You guys have really thought this out."
"Yes, we have." Rory nodded searching the isles.
"Quick! What came first, the chicken or the egg."
Rory sighed in exasperation, "Can we get back to this list please."
"Alright. Ooh, hey, legal pads."
"No." Rory denied, "Those are purple."
"Yes," Lorelai countered, "purple is festive."
Tori nodded, "I like purple."
"We can't have purple."
"Yes you can," Their mother responded.
"Oh look! They're on sale." Tori exclaimed grabbing some.
"Tori! We're going to a serious school now, we need serious paper."
"Paper's paper." Lorelai shrugged.
"Not at Chilton."
Tori pouted as her sister took the colorful paper out of her hands and put it back on the shelf, "But it's pretty." She whined.
Lorelai sighed playfully, "Alright, fine. Here is your serious paper."
"Thank you."
"Ooh and here are you somber highlighters," Their mother joked, "your maudlin pencils, your manic-depressive pens."
"Mom" Rory sighed as Tori stared longingly at all the colorful stationary items.
"Now these erasers are on lithium so they may seem cheerful," Lorelai told her daughters, "but we actually caught them trying to shove themselves in the pencil sharpener earlier."
