Wanda drew a smile on her face as she glimpsed the figure of her beloved among the shadows as he emerged from the woods, walking in her direction, after taking a long, long walk once they had returned from Dr. Lawrence's office, after receiving the news that had left them both stunned, even after Wanda had believed nothing would be able to surprise her anymore.
"Hey," she exclaimed, clutching her arms tighter as she felt a cold breeze pass through her body as she sat on the porch steps.
"Hey," Loki replied, grinning as he looked around for a moment, "have you been out here long?"
"No, not long," she replied, licking her lips, "how was the walk?"
"Good. Quiet," he answered, now being the one who crossed his arms as he felt another gust of cold air hit his body, watching the redhead mimic his action, so he approached her, sitting next to her, hoping the proximity of his body could mitigate that cold autumm night for both of them.
"It's going to sound silly but, I didn't see it coming..." Wanda snorted, lowering her gaze, "twins."
Loki couldn't help but chuckle, "I know. Neither did I."
"I really have no clue how my mom did it," she shook her head, "I was barely able to picture myself with one baby, but two?" she opened her mouth, feeling out of air from one second to the other, "I don't know if I can do this. I won't...
"Hey, hey, hey," Loki said hastily, turning to her to hold her hands, "don't say that. Of course you'll be able to. You're going to be a wonderful mother."
"No, I won't," she continued, still shaking her head, "I shouldn't feel this way. I should be happy about it. I should be able to feel them and I don't. I don't feel anything. The only thing I feel is fear and I don't even know if it's for them or for me—
"Hey, calm down," he asked, holding her hands tighter, "what you're feeling must be perfectly normal. It must be how every first-time parent feels, in fact, it would be stranger if you didn't."
"Well, you seem very calm about everything that's happening."
Loki couldn't help but laugh, licking his lips to place a sweet kiss on her hands, "I'm not. I'm just doing my best to stay calm for you. Inside I'm just as terrified as you are, little witch."
Wanda laughed too, a laugh with a mix of relief and nervousness. Knowing she wasn't the only one terrified by everything that was happening somehow managed to lift a weight from her shoulders.
"Do you think we're going to be able to keep them safe?"
"I'll do everything in my power to make sure of it. I promise. I'll never let anything bad happen to you or them, little witch."
And it was then that the smile on Wanda's face turned into one of pure relief, unlike Loki's, which faded as he let go of her hands, disconcerting the redhead.
"In fact, I had an idea, during my walk," Loki revealed, looking away from her, "it's risky, but... I think it's our best chance to make sure the three of you are safe. At least for now."
Wanda couldn't help but frown, "what are you talking about?"
"The babies, they're special, not only because of your powers or mine, they..." he gulped before turning his eyes to her beloved's dismayed ones, "they have a birthright... as rightful heirs to the throne of Asgard."
And any trace of emotion was erased from Wanda's face, who without missing a beat, began to softly shake her head, "what are you trying to say?"
Loki stood up, taking a couple of steps away from her as he clasped his hands together to rub them, regretting having thought about what he now knew was their best option.
