I'll never forget the moment I got the news. The way it made me feel. It was like an explosion of all these emotions and thoughts—relief and deep sadness. Even though I had technically only truly known Dakota for a year, the bond we made in that year was unbreakable. When they told me she was dead... something inside me snapped.
The Moment Time Stopped
"She's fine, we are just watching TV," Lesly tells BB on the phone.
"I don't need a babysitter!" I shout so BB can hear me.
"She's cranky," Lesly adds.
I roll my eyes and snuggle up with Cali on the couch, wrapping myself in a blanket. With me being back on watch due to my slip with Dakota, again, Lesly has agreed to stay with me while BB is at work.
Lesly works too, but her job allows her to work from home. So, she can stay with me when BB isn't here.
"Mel BB wants to know what food you want her to bring home on her break," Lesly turns to me.
"Tell her to get some pasta from Mama P's."
"You heard her? Okay, yeah I'll take some too. Thanks, B." Lesly says.
I pet Cali as the fat calico cat stretches out next to me.
"Will do, okay bye." Lesly hangs up.
"She's being extra," I complain.
"She's being safe, and she said don't forget to take your meds."
"Whatever," I pout and flip through the channels on TV.
Lesly pats my head before walking around the couch to sit next to me.
"How are you?" She asks.
"I'm fine, I'm not radioactive you know," I complain.
"We are just worried is all. This is the biggest slide back yet, we don't want you ending up like those crazy girls you see on TV, obsessed with the killer in jail."
"Gee thanks, Lesly," I frown.
She chuckles before snuggling up next to me.
"You're the worst best friend ever you know that right? You are supposed to be on my side," I playfully push her.
"I'm on the side of logic," she laughs.
"Jerk," I pout.
"So, BB told me she asked to propose to you."
"Whose best friend are you anyway?" I grumble.
She laughs.
"Mel, this is a big deal, have you thought about it?" she sits right and takes her brown hair out of the ponytail before slicking her hair back more and retying it.
"I don't know," I sigh.
"What's wrong? And don't say you don't love her because I know you do."
"It's just... all this stuff. It's like as long as Dakota is here, BB and I can't be happy. Dakota keeps getting in the way. BB will always hate Dakota, and I get it. The girl did kidnap and try to kill me, I get it. It's just... I can't hate Dakota like her. I just can't. All we fight about is Dakota, Dakota this, and Dakota that. I want to settle down with BB, I do, but if we can't get past this... I don't know if we'll ever be happy together." I pull my knees to my chest and stare at the ground.
"Melony—"
"Just don't okay Lesly, I know, Dakota is evil. I get it. Please, I don't want to fight."
