Okay so having the police knocking on my door with evidence that Dakota found me wasn't exactly part of the plan, but it all went better than I ever could have hoped. Now they have searched my house, twice, once with dogs, and did a polygraph on me. I can't possibly look any more innocent than I do now.
Not only does this get the police off my ass but Bernida and Lesly too. Now everyone can finally leave me the hell alone and Dakota and I can get on with our lives.
That's all I really wanted for us, to just live normal lives like normal people and pretend we were a normal couple. Not two girls linked together by murder and kidnapping. I wanted us to find that peace we once had, that little slice of happiness we made for ourselves. Now that we fooled everyone, we could get back to working on that.
We could get back to what we had.
It could finally be...
Like old times
"What are you thinking about?" Dakota asked me as she twirled a lock of my hair in her fingers.
"Is it bad that I don't feel guilty for lying to everyone?" I turn my naked body to face her, resting my head on her bare breast.
"You're asking the wrong person," she chuckled.
"Sometimes I wonder if maybe you are corrupting me into being a bad person," I say softly.
"Hmm," she hums in thought.
"Other times I wonder if maybe... maybe I've always been a bad person."
"Lying to protect someone you love doesn't make you a bad person," She says.
"Considering the circumstances, I think everyone would disagree with you."
"I don't care what everyone else thinks. I only care about you. Nothing you do could ever make me see you as a bad person," she kisses the top of my head.
I grab her free hand in mine and interlock our fingers.
"What do you want for breakfast today?" she asks.
"Surprise me," I smile.
"K," she kisses me on the cheek before getting up and heading to the bathroom to start the shower.
The contractors were able to knock everything out in one day, which was a relief to me. I didn't want Dakota to have to stay locked up for several days. Not that it would have mattered considering it's raining today and the contractors wouldn't have been able to come.
The house is officially finished. It just needs a little more decorating and furnishing.
"Mel, water is warm!" Dakota calls.
I yawn sit up and stretch before getting out of bed. When I walk into the bathroom Dakota is already in the shower. I use the bathroom before joining her.
"I'm sleepy," I pout. "Rain makes me sleepy."
"Once I make you breakfast you'll be wide awake, promise." She pecks me on the lips.
I smile.
We shower and get dressed before I throw our clothes in the wash and Dakota starts breakfast. While she cooks I sit on the couch with a cup of iced coffee and work on my new book.
I've started writing again, bills don't pay themselves, because while my current book sales are great it's only because Dakota is missing. Once people move on from the news, they will go down again.
"Want to eat in here or in the dining room?" Dakota asks me.
"Here is fine," I don't look up as I continue to type.
