the night had settled over new york city, quiet and calm, wrapping the streets in a soft stillness. from her apartment window, clementine could see the faint glow of streetlights, their soft orange hues flickering across the pavement below. the city seemed to hum in its usual rhythm, but tonight, there was a peacefulness that felt unusual—a calm in the air, like the city itself was taking a deep breath.

inside her apartment, the atmosphere was much the same. clementine was curled up in her bed, wearing her favorite oversized hoodie and flannel pajama pants. her laptop rested on her knees, and the faint glow from her bedside lamp barely lit the room, casting gentle shadows on the walls. the rest of the apartment was dark, the only sounds being the occasional muffled car passing by below and the soft hum of the city.

it had been a couple of days since she and nicholas had last spoken. work had kept them both busy—clementine wrapped up in studio sessions, battling the walls she kept running into while trying to write, and nicholas navigating meetings and decisions about his upcoming projects. the separation had felt heavier than usual, and she found herself glancing at her phone more often, wishing for a notification, an indication that he was thinking of her, too.
