17: make things interesting

kakucho's departure was the signal for you to go find the man you wanted to see first: baji.

but first you checked to see what yuzuha was up to, which she was visibly flirting with a random guy. she caught your eye and winked at you, causing you to smile and walk away. she had found some fun, at least for the moment.

you checked your phone, and sure enough, she had sent you a text that she was talking to a friend of one of the toman members.

it was enough reassurance that you went back to your main mission. despite the number of people and the now dimmed lighting, it didn't take you long to find baji, or rather him find you.

"y/n." you heard him say behind you as you entered what seemed to be a dining area.

your heart skipped a beat hearing your name leave his mouth for the first time, and you immediately spun around to see baji giving you a grin that rivaled your own. he sat on a barstool with chifuyu sitting next to him, who was surprisingly also smiling at you. both of them were drinking, but you knew them well enough to know they were sober.

"baji! chifuyu!"

"hey." the former said said, giving you a toothy smile back. his hair was loosely tied up into a messy bun but a lock of it still framed his face.

your fingers twitched from the urge to run your fingers through the lock of hair that was down, but you resisted.

"what're you up to?" chifuyu prompted.

"i'm waiting for someone to play beer pong with me." you shrugged playfully.

"i'll play you in a heartbeat, princess." baji said.

both you and chifuyu were so focused on the pet name baji used for you that you didn't even notice him standing up from his seat or someone coming up behind you.

a pair of arms wrapped around your shoulders, and a familiar earring jingle rang in your ear as kazutora perched his chin on your shoulder.

"hey hey hottie.. what are you doing here?" he asked.

"i'm about to kick baji's ass in beer pong. you?"

"count me in. and then maybe after we can get back into this position and see where the night goes?"kazutora asked flirtily.

baji turned and gave him an unamused look, and chifuyu got up and grabbed kazutora by the arm to lead him away.

"wait, chifuyu?! i want to dance with -" he started.

"shut up. it's baji-san's time." chifuyu let out in between his closed teeth so you couldn't read his lips.

"they're so weird sometimes." you pointed out with a chuckle.

"they're dorks."

"says the guy who's into ani-" you began, but baji interrupted you just in time for you to not finish your thought.

"let's go play."

you closed your mouth and smiled, and baji walked with you to the area you had played beer pong at last time. there were already 10 cups on each side and a ping pong ball, but there wasn't beer nearby.

he leaned down and grabbed a couple of beers from a pack and handed them to you to start filling the cups.

"how about we make this interesting?" he asked, giving you a sideways glance as you tilted a cup to pour beer into it.

"more interesting than me beating your ass?" you teased before taking a sip of the beer in your hand.

remarkably, it didn't just taste like dog water.
