[ chapter eleven ]

Point Place, Wisconsin

June 8, 1996

11:47 a.m.

Location: Kitty Forman's Kitchen

I COULDN'T HELP BUT LAUGH AS GRANDMA softly sang the Macarena song as she folded some clothes. Jay was on the counter watching her amusement while he drank a sofa. Gwen was just staring at her in disbelief at the scene displaying in front of us.

"Bum-didi bum-didi bum Macarena! Hey, Macarena!  Your turn, Gwen!" Grandma called out to the curly haired teenager in front of her after she placed a folded towel inside the basket

"Your turn, Jay!" Gwen shifted to my cousin, pointing her index fingers towards him and he jumped off the counter

"I'll do it with you, Mrs.Forman." Jay went to stand beside my already dancing grandmother and started dancing in sync with her

"I had more respect for you when you were the town slut." Gwen told him with wide eyes as grandma stopped dancing, lowering her hands

"Uh...um, honey. Honey. Honey." Grandma interrupted Jay's dancing, "Appreciate the enthusiasm. Back away from the coconut logs. There's hair flipping all over the place."

"People say I look like Keanu Reeves, only hotter." Jay told us with a slight smirk as he waved his hand through his now long hair

"Whoever told you that, they lied to you." I told my cousin and he frowned at me before Gwen reminded him, "I said that. And I was kidding."

"Well, I think you look dangerous." Grandma complimented Jay as she grabbed the small laundry basket and began walking away

"Ugh! When is Leia getting here?" Gwen asked my grandma as she spun around to face her and then turned to face both Jay and I, "And don't even think about it. I get first hug."

"No way, Gwen. It's been two months. Boyfriend gets first hug." Jay reminded her, glaring at her slightly

"I said first hug, not first hump." Gwen scoffed at him, and he narrowed his eyes at her, "Well, I'm different now, Gwen. I want hugs and humps."

"Come on you two, chillax." I tried to defuse their slight disagreement as I hopped off the stool and made my way between them

"It was always going to be me."

"Oh, it is so sweet that you three are fighting over Leia, but let's get real. Grandma gets first hug." Grandma gestured to herself but before anyone could argue, a car honked from the front

It was like an old western movie, where the sheriff faces the bandit. In this case, the sheriff being my grandmother and the bandits being Jay, Gwen and I. Jay made the first move of rushing forward but my grandma grabbed a shaker (I couldn't see if it it had pepper or salt) and shook it at his face causing him to throw his hands over his face.

Gwen was the next victim since she tried to brush past her but grandma caught up to her and hip-bumped her to the side with a a lot force than I thought cause Gwen fell to the floor. I rushed after my grandmother, hopping over Gwen. I followed her through the living room door and dodged the upcoming magazines by swerving to the other side of the couch.
