Back at Gideon's POVs:
A few days had gone by, and before I knew it, it was already Wednesday. Every day since the weekend, I'd been driving Savannah home from work. It had become our little routine—bringing her coffee before her shift would end, then waiting and taking her home, making sure she didn't get grounded by her parents. She made it clear that she wasn't allowed out except for school and work, but this gave us some freedom, and I was glad I could help in any way.
Despite her urge to put a mystery around her, I'd been getting to know her bit by bit, each drive home revealing something new. She was always full of energy, always cracking jokes or babbling about the weirdest things. Better than being sad, but I wanted all the hidden pieces about her life... I still didn't have her phone number or even a real photo of her. We'd been chatting on her website instead, an old habit that hadn't changed.
Now, I was at the water park, keeping an eye on Emma and Jake as they splashed around. Babysitting my siblings after school was a task that required most of my attention, but I still couldn't help but check my phone every now and then, careful not to get it wet.
Just as I glanced at the screen, I saw it—Savannah was online.
