Lily sat by the window of her apartment, her gaze fixed on the rain as it fell softly outside. It had been days since her last date with Gabriel, yet his words lingered in her mind, echoing with a warmth that both comforted and terrified her.

"I'm here, Lily. Whatever it is, I'll be here."

She wanted to believe him—God, how she wanted to. But trust didn't come easily to her. Not anymore.

Her phone buzzed on the table, jolting her from her thoughts. It was a message from Gabriel: "Thinking of you. How's your day going, sweetheart?"

A soft smile tugged at her lips. He was sweet—persistent in the gentlest way. But that smile faded as a pang of anxiety gnawed at her insides. How long could she keep this up? How long before her past shattered whatever fragile connection they were building?

After a moment's hesitation, she replied, "I'm okay. Just working. You?"

The response came almost immediately: "Same. But I've been thinking... Would you be up for a walk later? There's a place I want to show you. No pressure, of course."

Lily's fingers hovered over the screen, her heart racing. She liked him—more than she was willing to admit. Maybe this time, she wouldn't overthink it. With newfound resolve, she texted back: "Okay. When and where?"

Later that evening, Gabriel led Lily through a quiet park just outside the city. It was serene trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the sky was painted in hues of pink and gold as the sun began to set. They walked in comfortable silence until Gabriel stopped at a small clearing overlooking a lake.

"This is my favorite spot," he said, gazing out over the water. "Whenever I need to clear my head, I come here. I thought you might like it too."

Lily looked at the calm surface of the lake, the stillness settling her restless thoughts. She breathed in the fresh air, feeling the tension in her shoulders begin to ease.

Gabriel turned to face her, his expression soft and sincere. "You don't have to say anything, Lily. But I want you to know that I'm here. I know it's not easy for you... but whenever you're ready, I'll be here."

Lily looked down at the ground, her chest tightening. She wanted to trust him—she really did. But the weight of her past clung onto her like a shadow, a constant reminder of the walls she had built around her heart.

"I'm scared, Gabriel," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I've been hurt before... in ways I can't even explain. And I don't know if I can do this."

Gabriel reached for her hand, his touch gentle and warm. "I'm not asking you to trust me right away," he said softly. "But I'm not going anywhere. We can take this as slow as you need. I just want to be here for you."

Lily looked up, meeting his gaze for the first time. In his eyes, she saw a flicker of understanding, a promise of patience. For the first time in a long time, she felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could let him in—little by little.
