As the car turned onto the familiar road leading up to the house, my breath hitched. I leaned closer to the window, watching as the mansion came into view. It looked almost magical, glowing softly under the night sky. Strings of delicate fairy lights lined the grand entrance, casting a warm, inviting glow over the manicured gardens. The towering trees were adorned with small lanterns, their flickering lights swaying gently in the breeze, making the entire place seem like a scene straight out of a fairytale.

They must have decorated everything for me... The realization made my heart ache with a mix of gratitude and guilt. I had never been away from my family for so long before. Every birthday, every holiday—we had always been together. But then, because of him—because of my own confused, tangled emotions—I had to leave. I thought putting distance between us would help me forget him, help me move on. Yet now, as I sat in the car, staring at the place I had always called home, a question I had tried to ignore for so long whispered at the back of my mind.

Was it really worth it?

I chewed on my bottom lip, watching the lights reflect in the dark glass like tiny stars. Did I really forget him? Or did staying away only make me fall deeper—make me long for him more? The thought made my chest tighten painfully. My heart seemed to have a mind of its own, racing at the mere thought of seeing him again. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to push the image of his smile, his voice, his eyes out of my mind, but it was no use. No matter how hard I tried, the memory of him lingered, unrelenting and bittersweet.

The car slowed to a stop, and Uncle Lee stepped out, his door closing with a soft thud that pulled me back to the present. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. This isn’t the time to think about him. Tonight was about reuniting with my family, about cherishing this long-awaited moment. I owed them that much.

I stepped out of the car, the cool night air wrapping around me like a comforting embrace. As I lifted my gaze, I saw them—my parents—standing at the grand entrance of the mansion, their silhouettes bathed in the golden glow of the lights. My mother’s face lit up the moment she spotted me, a radiant smile spreading across her lips. My father, ever the composed figure, stood beside her, but even from a distance, I could see the glimmer of warmth and emotion in his eyes.

“Omma…”

The word left my lips in a soft whisper, carrying all the longing and love I had kept locked away for so long.

Before I knew it, I was rushing forward, my feet carrying me faster and faster until I was right in front of her. I threw my arms around her, feeling her warmth envelop me as she hugged me back tightly, as if she were afraid I’d disappear if she let go. I closed my eyes, breathing in the familiar scent of her perfume—a blend of jasmine and lavender that instantly brought back memories of childhood.

“You’re really here…”

She murmured softly, her voice thick with emotion as she held me close. I felt a lump form in my throat, but I swallowed it down and pulled away, only to turn and wrap my arms around my father.

“Appa…”

I breathed, looking up at him. His usually stern face softened as he placed a gentle hand on my back, giving me a firm, reassuring pat.

“I missed you both so much”

I whispered, the words tumbling out in a rush. All the nights I had spent alone, all the times I had longed for their comforting presence—it all flooded back at once, overwhelming me.

My mother’s hand gently brushed against my arm, and I turned to see her frowning slightly, though there was a playful glint in her eyes.

“You know we couldn’t bear to stay away from you for so long, yet you left us, and then you only come back after two whole years?”

She said, her voice wavering with a mix of feigned annoyance and deep affection.

A small laugh escaped my lips despite the tears prickling at the corners of my eyes.

“I know, Omma. I’m sorry”

I took her hand in mine, squeezing it gently.

“I didn’t mean to be gone for so long. I just…”

I hesitated, glancing down for a moment, unsure how to explain the complicated mess of reasons behind my absence.

But she didn’t need an explanation. She reached up, cupping my cheek with a tenderness that made my heart melt.

“It’s okay, sweetheart. You’re here now, and that’s all that matters”

She leaned in, and I bent down slightly as she pressed a soft kiss to my cheek.

I hugged her again, feeling the familiar warmth of her embrace.

“I promise I won’t leave like that again”

I murmured, meaning every word.

“I’m here to stay”

“That’s more like it”

She replied with a smile, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. She patted my cheek gently, her touch filled with motherly love and reassurance.

We stood there, enveloped in the warmth of our little reunion. My father cleared his throat softly, breaking the moment.

“Let’s go inside. We’ve been waiting for this day for so long. We even prepared all your favourite dishes”

He gestured towards the entrance, his voice betraying a hint of eagerness.

“Of course, Appa”

I smiled up at him, feeling a sense of peace and belonging settle over me like a soothing balm.

With one last glance at the glowing mansion—my home—I linked my arms with both my parents, and together, we stepped inside, where the true welcome awaited.
