At the end of June, during the dog days of summer, the sun blazed fiercely.

The scorching sun baked the earth, making the big yellow dog wilt and seek shade under a large tree.

At a house on the eastern edge of the village, red paper still adorned the front door, indicating a recent wedding. Yet, the courtyard was eerily quiet, devoid of any festive atmosphere.

In the dim, narrow room, two women sat by the bed, whispering to each other.

"Better to live miserably than die. Why would he hang himself?"

An elderly woman beside her said, "Da Chuan isn't even home. If something happens, how will we explain it to him?"

"Cough, cough, cough, water, do you have any water?" A weak, hoarse voice interrupted their conversation.

"Oh, thank goodness you're awake!" The old woman hurriedly brought a clay bowl to his lips.

The water in the bowl was lukewarm with a sour smell, but Lu Yao drank it in small sips, trying hard not to gag.

In truth, he had been awake for some time but had been pretending to sleep. He had no way to hide his panic except by feigning unconsciousness.

Unfamiliar surroundings, unfamiliar people, and a jumble of memories in his head—it took half a day to digest and understand his situation.

Lu Yao had transmigrated into a body that shared his name. Yesterday, this body had just married a man.

Indeed, in this era, men could marry men, and even more astonishingly, men could bear children. Those born with a vermilion birthmark were called "ge'er," and Lu Yao had transmigrated into one such young ge'er.

The original owner of this body had just gotten married and attempted suicide that night, but luckily someone found and saved him. The original owner must have died, otherwise, Lu Yao wouldn't have taken over this body.

After finishing the bowl of water, the elderly woman said, "It's good that you're awake. Don't do anything foolish again." Seeing that Lu Yao didn't respond, she continued, "Think positively. Although the Zhao family is poor, Da Chuan has hunting skills. You won't starve with him."

The younger woman also offered some comforting words, but they could only offer advice; ultimately, he needed to come to terms with it himself.

They had to return home to cook lunch, so they got up to leave.

Lu Yao sat up, supported by the bed, his throat burning from the original owner's attempt at hanging.

The old woman pressed him back down, saying, "Don't get up. Rest properly. I'm surnamed Zhao, related to Da Chuan. Everyone calls me Grandma Zhao. She's Sister Tian Er's wife. Call us if you need anything."

Once they left, Lu Yao immediately got up, wearing his straw sandals, and ran to the backyard to relieve himself. This had been a long wait since his previous life.

It was embarrassing to admit, but in his previous life, he had been hit by a car while rushing to the public restroom. When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in this strange era.

The memories left by the original owner were chaotic, but after sorting through them, he found useful information.

Lu Yao was nineteen years old, with five siblings, and he was the third child. His eldest brother had passed away, his second brother was married, and he had two unmarried ge'er brothers.

The family he had married into was surnamed Zhao. His husband's name was unclear, but he knew he had no parents and lived with two young siblings. The reason he couldn't remember the name was that the original owner hadn't liked him.
