The illness came on fiercely, and it took three whole days before there was any improvement.

It had also rained for three days outside. Today, early in the morning, the heavens finally ceased their divine wrath, and the sun shyly revealed itself.

Although Lu Yao's condition had improved, illness comes like a mountain falling but leaves like a thread being pulled. His body felt as if all its bones had been extracted, leaving him weak and without strength.

Early in the morning, Zhao Xiaonian entered the room with a bowl of dark medicine, "Sister-in-law, it's time to take your medicine."

Lu Yao wrinkled his nose, highly skeptical that this bitter and stinky concoction could actually cure anything.

He had heard that obtaining this medicine wasn't easy; Zhao Beichuan had made several trips to town to get it. Pinching his nose, he drank it all in one go. The bitter taste of herbs exploded in his mouth, making him feel nauseous and causing him to gag.

Zhao Xiaonian quickly stuffed a piece of candy into his mouth, "Feeling better now?"

"Yes, much better. Where's my brother?"

"He went to work in the fields. He left before dawn."

The crops in the fields had been submerged by rainwater, and everyone was busy draining and clearing the fields, hoping to salvage what they could. Otherwise, there would be no harvest come autumn.

The Zhao family owned twelve acres and six tenths of land, seven acres of which were on the mountain, and the remaining five acres and more were at the foot of the mountain.

The fields on the mountain were relatively fine, except for some terraces being washed away by the rain. Most of the crops were unharmed. However, the fields at the foot of the mountain were almost entirely flooded.

Zhao Beichuan was digging ditches at the edge of the field, trying to drain the water as quickly as possible. The longer the delay, the more crops would die.

Many others shared the same idea and were busy digging ditches to drain the water.

Early in the morning, Song Guangfu, along with his mother-in-law and father-in-law, came to work in the fields. Hearing that those who had been serving labor duty had returned, he couldn't stop thinking about it. As soon as he arrived, he saw Zhao Beichuan not far away.

Both were men, but Zhao Beichuan seemed more imposing than others, especially with his strong arms, which stirred something within him.

Song's mother-in-law glanced at her son-in-law. "Stop staring and get to work!"

Song Guangfu reluctantly picked up his shovel and began digging ditches to drain the water.

By noon, Zhao Beichuan had finished clearing their fields. Looking at the wilted crops, he wondered how many would survive.

After washing his hands, he was about to head home when someone called out to him.

"Da Chuan, you're done?"

Zhao Beichuan turned around to see Song Guangfu approaching with a water pouch.

"Thirsty? Want some water?"

"No need, I'll drink at home."

"Do you want something to eat? I brought some bean cakes."

Zhao Beichuan frowned, "What do you want? Just say it." There were so many people around, and misunderstandings could easily arise.

"Do you remember what I told you last time?"

Zhao Beichuan nodded grimly, "I remember."

Song Guangfu nervously tiptoed, "When... when do you plan to divorce him?"
