After finishing the chicken coop, Lu Yao started to cook. He wasn't hungry since he had eaten noodles in town at noon, but the two children hadn't eaten yet. Plus, Zhao Beichuan was back, so he decided to cook more food.
The Zhao family only had millet, so Lu Yao took two dou of millet to Sister Tian Er's house and exchanged it for one dou of gray flour. He planned to make noodles.
Making noodles required skill in kneading the dough. If the dough was too soft, the noodles would have a poor texture; if slightly harder, they would be chewy.
In his previous life, Lu Yao excelled at making noodle dishes because his hometown was Jincheng, where noodle dishes were most common. Growing up, he learned by observation without needing formal instruction.
He could steam buns, make dumplings, and roll noodles. If not for the limitations of cooking tools, he could even bake flatbreads.
Kneading, rolling, and cutting the dough in one fluid motion, the thick noodles were soon cooked in the pot.
Lu Yao then made a soup base with scallions and lard, adding freshly picked baby bok choy. The green, tender leaves looked better than anything sold in the town's food stalls.
"Wash your hands, it's time to eat."
"Okay!" Zhao Xiaonian and Zhao Xiaodou couldn't wait any longer. The aroma from the pot made them salivate as they stood by the stove, waiting for their sister-in-law to serve them noodles.
"Go tell your brother to come in for dinner."
Zhao Xiaodou put down her bowl and ran outside. "Big Brother, Sister-in-law says it's time to eat."
Zhao Beichuan finished weaving the last straw shoe, got up, brushed off the straw fibers, and was immediately drawn in by the enticing aroma. Grandma Zhao had said he burned the pot, but he never expected the food to taste so good!
There were only three sets of bowls and chopsticks in the house, and all three insisted that Lu Yao eat first.
"I ate in town, you guys go ahead."
Zhao Beichuan didn't hesitate, scooped a large bowl of noodles, poured on the scallion oil sauce, and slurped away.
"Sister-in-law, the noodles you made are delicious!" Zhao Xiaonian praised, the noodles being soft yet chewy, the broth flavorful, and the crisp, sweet bok choy making it the best noodle soup they had ever tasted!
Lu Yao watched the three of them eating voraciously, like a farmer watching his pigs, feeling deeply satisfied. For a cook, the diners enjoying the meal is the greatest compliment.
"Cough, if you like it, eat more. I can cook more if needed."
Xiaonian and Xiaodou were full after one large bowl, holding their round bellies and burping. Zhao Beichuan ate four bowls and drank every drop of the broth, truly impressive!
After dinner, Lu Yao brought out the plums for the children to eat. Eating too many could upset their stomachs, so he gave each of them only five.
Seeing the plums, Zhao Xiaonian remembered what happened a few days ago and began complaining to her brother, recounting everything that Lady Song and Grandma Song did.
"Lady Song invited me and my brother to eat plums at their place. Song Ping accused me of being a thief, so we fought.
Then Grandma Song came to our house and insulted me and Sister-in-law, who retaliated by throwing a bucket of feces on her!"
Zhao Beichuan looked at Lu Yao in surprise, impressed by his boldness.
Feeling embarrassed under his gaze, Lu Yao turned and went into the room.
