She was in my lap, her face inches from mine, the tension between us thick and electric. I could feel her breath against my skin, warm and unsteady. My hand rested on her waist, pulling her closer without even realizing it. Her eyes searched mine, hesitant but full of something I couldn't quite read.

My gaze flicked down to her lips, and for a moment, the world narrowed to just the two of us. The air around us stilled, and I felt that pull, stronger than ever. I leaned in, my pulse quickening, the distance between us disappearing. Her hand rested on my chest, like she was about to push me away... but she didn't.

Her lips parted slightly, and I could feel the heat radiating off her, the unspoken question hanging in the air between us: Would we cross that line?

But then, the moment shattered. Her phone rang loudly, breaking whatever spell had us locked in place.

Aashvi flinched, breaking our trace, and quickly got off my lap, her fingers fumbling for the phone. "Umm... It's Anika. I'll be back in just a moment," she said, her voice shaky, almost breathless.

Without waiting for me to respond, she left to attend the call, leaving behind a palpable awkwardness that I wasn't used to.

I ran a hand through my hair, lying back down in my spot, trying to shake off the awkwardness. My mind was a mess of what-ifs. What would have happened if Anika hadn't called? Would I have let things go further?

When Aashvi returned, she silently lay down beside me, pulling the blanket over us without saying a word. I glanced at her out of the corner of my eye. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips parted slightly as if she'd just run a mile. I couldn't tell if it was from the call or... something else.

Sensing the mattress dip under her weight, I turned to face her, trying to keep my tone casual. "Was it something serious?"

Her face softened, a faint glow still lingering on her skin. "Uh... no. She just needed some help." She paused, biting her lower lip in a way that caught my attention. "She's good now, though. It's really late."

I hummed in response, but I could feel the shift in the atmosphere, the playful banter we had earlier had evaporated. What was left was this... heaviness. I was no stranger to tension, but this was different. It was personal. My thumb brushed her hand almost absentmindedly, a tender gesture I wasn't used to.

"What are you thinking?" I asked quietly, my curiosity getting the better of me. My voice was softer than usual, less guarded.

She hesitated, her teeth worrying her lip again, making it harder for me to focus. Her eyes darted away from mine, unsure if she wanted to be completely honest.

"I'm thinking nothing... let's just sleep," she murmured, her voice trailing off.

I didn't believe her. Not for a second. The idea of what might have happened if Anika hadn't called kept circling in my mind, and I had a feeling she was thinking the same thing. But I let it go. For now.
