"Lia, I am leaving for work. Breakfast is ready, microwave it before leaving for college. Lock the house properly. All the best for your first day, sweetie. Bye!" My mom says, standing at the door of my room. I let out sleepy hum before snuggling my blanket closer to me.
After my mom shuts the door, I open my one eye to check the time.
7:00 am
I close my eye and stay for five more minutes before finally getting up and making my bed. My first class for the day is at eight-thirty. The campus is thirty minutes away, and since I am going to use the transit bus and its my first day, I decided to leave the house early just in case.
It has been two months since I got into Stockton University, and today is the first day. Yesterday was the orientation, and I already fell in love with the place.
I drank my coffee and ate the vanilla pancakes before going to the bathroom to freshen up. Once I was done, I picked out my clothes. Since it was the first day of my college life, I decided to go for something that would look cool but casual at the same time. I picked out the classic white t-shirt and a pair of denim jeans. Could never go wrong with that. I remembered to also keep a denim jacket in my bag supposing I start to feel cold there.
I lock my house my behind me with Cyra in my arms. I walk over to the Patel's, our next-door neighbours.
"Hey, Alaia!" Mrs. Patel greets me, her face glowing more than the sun itself.
"Good morning, Mrs. Patel. My mom is at work, and I am leaving for college. So can I leave Cyra with you?" I ask nervously.
"Oh, today is your first day, isn’t it? Your mom told me. And yes, she also told me to take care of Cyra. Hello beautiful!" She carefully takes the cat from my arms and holds her close to her chest.
"And all the best for your first day."
"Thank you, Mrs. Patel. Bye, Sia, I will be home soon. Behave well, ok," I gently kiss Cyra between her ears. Mrs. Patel gently waves Cyra's little paw as if to say goodbye.
I reach the bus stop just in time for my bus to arrive. I take the window seat in the middle and plug in my airpods to drown out everything else.
After about thirty minutes, I reach the campus. I scan my id card and enter the building, going towards the lecture room.Yesterday, after the orientation, I walked around the campus and explored a little bit of the campus. So, I knew my way around the building and quickly found the room.
Plenty of people were already present in the room, some sitting alone and some in groups, talking to each other. I take the first bench on the middle row. Sitting in front of the class will help me concentrate better.
Today, it was only an introductory lecture, and the professor had already shared the study material with us. I took it out and started going through it when I heard a soft thud beside me. I saw a guy, a very handsome one, take a seat beside me. He was wearing glasses (so, cute too).
"Is this seat taken?" He asked when he noticed me.
"It's taken now."
"Hi, I am Elias. Elias Karlsson," he offered me his hand.
"Alaia Bennet," I said while giving him a handshake.
"Not Elizabeth?" He teased.
"The joke's outdated," I deadpanned. "Come up with something original."
He raised his hands in surrender while still smiling.
Before we could continue, a girl in a black crop top and sky blue short skirt came stomping in the room, glared at Elias, and went all the way at the back.
I raised my eyebrows at him, and he sighed before opening his mouth.
"She's my girlfriend, Ria."
"And since you are not sitting with her and the way she glared at you, I'm assuming you guys had a fight?"
"Right," he said. "She wants me to sit with her at the back of the room so that we can talk, and I want to sit in the front because I want to actually concentrate on the lecture."
"Hmm, sounds like you guys don't spend a lot of time together outside college, and so she wants to do it during class," I contemplated.
"You hit the nail on the head. I am doing a dual-degree and also have sports practice after my classes, so I don't exactly have time. I told her this, and she got furious about it," he explained.
"Would you like some advice?" I inquired, not knowing if he wanted a solution or just wanted to rant to someone, even if a complete stranger.
"Yes, please," he insisted.
"You can try talking to her when she is in a better mood. Calmly explain your situation, find a middle ground, and schedule your together time. That way, you can prioritise your studies, sports, and your relationship," I advised.
'Wow!" He breathed out. "You are good at this. How many relationships have you had?"
I smirked,"None."
"You're lying."
"I am not."
"Then how....," he trailed off.
"I've never been in a relationship, but people around me have," I explained.
Before he could respond, our professor entered the room, greeted us, and started the class.
I sneaked a glance at my watch. She was five minutes late.
The lecture entered after an hour, and Elias quickly got up to go to his girlfriend.
"Thank you," he said to me.
"All the best," I gave him a thumbs up and exited the room.
I was making my way to the next lecture when I saw.....
Fuck my life.
