CHAPTER TWO
[2]
"eyes without a face" billy idolAs the sun dipped lower, casting a warm golden glow across the water, the group slowed down, gathering together near the shore. Olivia's heart still raced from running through the waves, her curls now damp and clinging to her face. She glanced at her friends, each one smiling, laughter still echoing in the air. It was one of those moments when she wished she could freeze forever.
Kiara sat beside her, pulling her knees up to her chest. "Okay, I'll admit it" she said, looking out at the glowing horizon. "The sunset really is the best part."
"See?" John B grinned, flicking some water in her direction. "Told you."
Pope finished reading his maths book, satisfied with his work, then plopped down next to Jj. "So, what do we do next? We can't just sit here all night, can we?"
John B stretched his arms out, leaning back in the sand. "Why not? I vote for sitting. Maybe a bonfire later."
Olivia listened to her friends, but her attention drifted to her boyfriend Jj. There was something different about him tonight; more thoughtful, like his mind was somewhere else, even though he was here with them. She watched as he stared out at the ocean, the fading sunlight casting a soft light on his face.
"Jj, you good?" She asked, nudging him lightly with her shoulder.
He blinked, shaking off whatever thoughts were keeping him quiet, and gave her a small smile.
"Yeah, I'm good. Just thinking about... stuff." Olivia tilted her head. "What kind of stuff?" He paused, then shrugged, trying to brush it off. "Nothing big. Just... how things change, you know? One minute, everything feels perfect, and the next, it's all different."Olivia frowned, feeling a little tug in her chest.
"Nothing's changing now," she said, trying to reassure him. "We're all still here."Jj looked at her, his eyes softening. "I know, it's just; never mind. I'm being weird."
Before Olivia could ask more, Jonh B jumped to his feet, brushing sand off his shorts. "Alright, enough of this serious talk. Let's play a game!" Kiara groaned. "What kind of game?"
Jonh B grin widened, his eyes glinting with that usual spark of trouble. "The kind where the loser has to dive into the ocean fully clothed."
Pope shook his head. "I'm not falling for that again."
Olivia laughed, standing up. "Fine, but this time I'm choosing the game."
Jonh B raised an eyebrow. "You think you can come up with something better?"
She smiled, feeling playful energy bubbling up inside her. "Oh, I know I can. Let's make it a game of questions. You ask something, and whoever can't answer has to run into the water."
"Deal," Jonh B said, ready for the challenge.
The group circled up in the sand, the sun now just a thin line on the horizon. Olivia could feel the cool evening air creeping in, but her heart was warm, and for the first time in a long while, she felt something shifting between her and Jj; like they were on the edge of something new. Something she wasn't sure she was ready to face just yet.
