CHAPTER ELEVEN
[11]
"casual" chappell roanOlivia stirred slowly, the sunlight filtering through the curtains casting a soft glow across the room. Her head throbbed, a reminder of the previous night's drinks, and for a moment, she struggled to remember where she was. The bed beneath her was unfamiliar, too big, too luxurious for her own.
It all came rushing back in a flash. The party.
The pool. Rafe. Her eyes shot open, and she froze as she felt a heavy arm draped around her waist. Rafe's arm.
Her breath caught in her throat as she carefully turned her head, her heart pounding. Rafe was still asleep, his face peaceful, his grip loose but possessive around her. She could smell the faint scent of alcohol mixed with his cologne, and the realization hit her hard: she had spent the night in Rafe Cameron's bed. What have I done? The thought slammed into her, panic rising in her chest. It wasn't as if anything had happened, she was still fully dressed in her clothes from the night before, but the fact that she had ended up here, in Rafe's bed, with his arm around her, felt like crossing a line she hadn't intended to cross.
And then the real fear hit: Sarah. If Sarah knew Olivia had spent the night here, she would lose it.
Olivia and Sarah were best friends, but Sarah's hatred for Rafe was well-known. Olivia knew she couldn't let her friend find out.So she lifted Rafe's arm carefully from around her waist, slipping out of the bed as quietly as possible. He stirred slightly but didn't wake up, muttering something incoherent before turning over.Olivia exhaled in relief, grabbing her shoes from the floor and tiptoeing toward the door. Her heart raced as she cracked the door open, glancing down the hallway to make sure no one was around. The coast was clear. She slipped out, her pulse pounding in her ears, and made her way quickly through the house.
———
By the time she made it home, the weight of what had just happened was pressing heavily on her. She leaned against her front door for a moment, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She didn't even know how to process everything. Rafe, the party, the strange feeling of nostalgia mixed with regret.
As she headed inside, her dad was sitting at the kitchen table, reading the morning paper and sipping his coffee. He looked up as she walked in.
"Morning, kiddo. You're up early," he said with a small smile.
"Yeah, couldn't really sleep," she replied, her voice tighter than she wanted it to be. She forced herself to sit down at the table, hoping the conversation would be a distraction from the chaos swirling in her head.
"Big plans today?" her dad asked, raising an eyebrow as he folded his newspaper.
"Not really," Olivia said with a shrug, "I might head over to see some friends. Haven't heard from JJ in a while, so I thought I'd check in."
Her dad nodded, not prying too much. He was good at that. Letting her handle her own business. But the mention of JJ sent another wave of unease through her. She hadn't heard from him in days, and with everything that had been going on between them, she needed to see him. Maybe they could finally talk and figure out what had been causing the distance between them.
After chatting with her dad for a few more minutes, Olivia excused herself and headed out the door, her nerves tightening with every step toward JJ's house. She didn't know what to expect, but she knew something was off, something she couldn't ignore any longer.
When she arrived at JJ's place, her heart was already beating too fast. She hesitated for a moment at the front gate, trying to gather her courage. The house looked quiet from the outside, but as she got closer, she noticed something strange. The front door was slightly ajar.
Curious, she walked toward it, pushing the door open gently. "JJ?" she called out, her voice tentative.
No response.
As she stepped inside, she heard faint voices coming from the back of the house. Olivia moved toward the sound, her heart thudding louder with every step. She wasn't sure why, but something in her gut told her she didn't want to see what was on the other side of that door.
And then she saw them.
In the small, dimly lit living room, JJ and Kiara were standing close, too close. Olivia's breath hitched as her eyes focused on them. JJ's hands were cupping Kiara's face, and before she could even process what was happening, JJ leaned in and kissed her.
Olivia felt her heart shatter in an instant. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. It was like time slowed down, the air thick with betrayal. She had come here, hoping to fix whatever had been wrong between her and JJ, but now she understood.
This was what had been wrong all along.
Without thinking, a sob broke free from her throat, and the sound seemed to echo through the room. JJ and Kiara broke apart immediately, their eyes wide in shock as they realized she was there.
"Olivia..." JJ started, his voice shaky, guilt written all over his face.
But Olivia couldn't stay to hear whatever excuse he was about to make. Tears blurred her vision as she turned and bolted out of the house, her heart breaking with every step. She didn't even know where she was running to. She just needed to get away, to escape the crushing weight of what she had just witnessed.
"Olivia, wait!" she heard.JJ's voice behind her, but she didn't stop. She couldn't.
All the confusion, the distance, JJ's strange behavior. It all made sense now. He had been hiding this from her, lying to her. And Kiara...
Olivia couldn't even wrap her mind around the betrayal she felt from Kiara, her friend, the person she had trusted.Olivia ran until her legs burned, the tears streaming down her face as she finally stopped at the edge of the beach, gasping for breath. She collapsed onto the sand, sobs wracking her body, her mind spinning in a thousand directions. Everything she had been trying to hold together was unraveling, and for the first time in a long time, she didn't know how to stop it.
Her life was falling apart, and she didn't know how to put the pieces back together.
Little talk!!!
