CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
[21]
"Les" childish gambino
Olivia's heart was pounding as she made her way through the crowd, her gaze set on where she last saw Rafe. A mix of excitement and nerves bubbled in her stomach, the thrill of whatever was about to happen making her feel lighter than air. She wasn't sure what it was about Rafe that always pulled her in, but she couldn't deny the way he'd been making her feel lately-like she was the only thing that mattered when he looked at her. And tonight, in the middle of this buzzing party, that feeling was stronger than ever.
Finally, she spotted him leaning against the wall, a lazy grin spreading across his face as he saw her approach.
"Hey," he slurred, his voice thick with the effects of a few too many drinks.
"Hey," she replied, smiling widely, There was something about his half-smile, the way he was looking at her as if she was the only thing keeping his attention.
Olivia tried to keep her cool, her cheeks still warm from their last encounter. "How's the party been?" she asked.
Rafe shrugged, his gaze not leaving hers. "It's been good...but it was missing something."
"Oh, really?" she teased, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah," he said, leaning in slightly, his voice a murmur as his eyes sparkled with that familiar mischief. "You."
Olivia felt her stomach flip, her pulse picking up as she grinned. "Well," she whispered, "I'm here now."
Rafe's smirk widened, and before she could say anything else, they were inches apart. His hand found its way to her waist, pulling her close until she could feel his heartbeat against her. Then, with a look that seemed to ask for her permission, he leaned in, and their lips met.
This kiss was different from the last, and everything about it felt electric. It wasn't soft or gentle this time-no, this was heated, intense, like every unsaid word and unexpressed feeling was pouring out between them. Olivia's fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer as if she couldn't bear the thought of any space between them. Rafe's hand on her waist tightened, grounding her in a way she hadn't felt in a long time, like he was holding on just as tightly as she was. Every nerve in her body was alive, her heart racing, and it felt like they were the only two people in the world.
When they finally pulled apart, both slightly breathless, they couldn't help but laugh. It was like they'd shared a secret that no one else could understand.
"Come on," Rafe said, grinning as he took her hand. "Let's go find the others."
They made their way back to the group, their fingers still laced together. As soon as they got there, Topper turned to everyone with a glint in his eyes, "Pool time!" he announced, barely able to contain his excitement.
Everyone cheered, and they all made their way to the pool. Once there, the group settled in, laughing and joking around. Olivia found herself sandwiched between Leah and Rafe, feeling more relaxed than she had in ages. They traded stories, talking about everything from school drama to old memories, and the laughter came easily.
Leah was recounting some ridiculous story about their high school days. "Remember that time when Kelce tried to start his own business selling those awful friendship bracelets?" she asked, laughing.
"Oh god, that was a disaster," Olivia said, covering her mouth. "I think you made, what, two dollars?" she teased Kelce, who rolled his eyes.
"Hey, at least I tried, alright?" Kelce grinned.
They kept laughing and talking until, after a while, Rafe nudged Olivia's arm, his eyes bright with that familiar spark. "Hey, come with me."
Olivia looked at him suspiciously. "Where are we going?"
"You'll see," he replied, his hand already reaching for hers.
Without another word, he led her through the house and up a small staircase until they emerged on the roof. They were both tipsy, and the thrill of sneaking up there made everything feel more exciting, almost surreal.
"What the hell are we doing up here, Rafe?" Olivia asked, looking around, slightly nervous but grinning.
He shrugged, glancing at her with that mischievous glint in his eyes. "What does it look like?" Before she could respond, he scooped her up in his arms, holding her tightly as she gasped.
"Rafe, I swear to god, if you jump-" She was cut off by his wild laugh.
"You ready?" he asked, grinning down at her.
"No! Rafe, don't you—" But before she could finish her sentence, he leaped off the roof, carrying her with him as they plunged into the pool below.
They hit the water, and Olivia's curls were instantly soaked, the cool water clenching her body as they came up for air, sputtering and laughing. She couldn't believe he'd actually done it.
"Can you believe this girl right here?" Rafe shouted, looking around at their friends in the pool. "The coolest chick in the OBX!" he added, grinning proudly.
Everyone cheered, and Riley rolled her eyes, but she was laughing, her arms instinctively wrapping around Rafe's shoulders as she hugged him close. She couldn't deny that she was having the best time.
