In a strange request of a deserted land, a close distance from our apartment, I opted to suggest Xavier the same land I'd go to feed the crows. We made a quick stop at the apartment to get some exotic fruits from my place, while Xavier went to the grocery store to buy something. In the end, we found ourselves by the west border of Linkon a little past four PM.
A murder of crows greeted our arrival with simultaneous caws - but, really they were just excited to see me after so long, I thought. Approaching them with a small container of exotic fruits, the crows took a moment to look at the oddly colored fruits, but nevertheless continued their banter with one another. Some of them even tilted their heads my way, cawing, as if asking where I'd been after so long.
"Sorry, I've been busy," I chuckled as I saw one pecked on the fruit, cawing at the newfound taste while the others took the cue to try it out themselves. Out of the eight crows present, I didn't see any metallic crow. Mephisto wasn't here today. And, yet I found a few shiny, long screws and a shiny silver button, which I thought would look tacky on any article of clothes.
Soft rustles came from behind me. "You feed crows?" Xavier's soft voice inquired curiously. Turning to look at him, I notice the confused but intrigued expression on his face as he stared at the crows feasting on the fruits.
"Yeah, they usually give me shiny things in return," I took the screws and button into my hand, showing them to Xavier. "See? They're pretty neat."
Xavier hummed in response, lifting his head up to stare at the majority of dead trees in the distance. A bright ray of light blinded me momentarily before it slowly vanished. There, standing in front of Xavier and I, were the animal wanderers from earlier. They all stare at us expectantly, except for the fawn as it turned his head all around to take in its new surroundings. Walking forward, Xavier presented the medium sized paper bag from the store, pulling out a smaller one from inside of it. Xavier revealed at least a kilogram of meat and half a kilogram of gullet for the carnivores, and half a jackfruit, two pittayas and three apples for the herbivores.
Earlier, the wanderers requested that we find them a safe space to settle in until they get their land of territory back. So, Xavier decided to bring them to a place that was not in the bustling parts of Linkon City and help them until they adapt to their temporary home.
"Isn't jackfruit expensive?" I watched as the animals shared the meal Xavier brought evenly, taking turns to grab a piece of their preferred food.
"Yeah, but it reminded me of your fruit salad. I think they would like the taste too," Xavier smiled as he watched the wanderers eat in peace. The white tiger was the last wanderer to take the last piece of gullet for itself, nodding its head at Xavier to show its gratitude before it started to eat.
