Addie
"What did you do to me?" Hades growls, clearly irritated with the turn of events and the forced shift he has undergone. His hand rubs the glowing red cord around his wrist.
I look at Willow, the woman responsible for it. She is so beautiful it makes me want to vomit. Or perhaps the insecurity she brings up in me makes my stomach curdle dangerously. Fair, unmarred, porcelain skin. Baby blue eyes. Tall and curvy. Like a Jessica rabbit but with blond hair.
I'm immediately overwhelmed with the same feeling I have had since I saw her eyeing a very naked Hades with unmistakable lust in her eyes. Jealousy. It courses through me so ferociously that I take Hades' hand and shift closer to him, staking my claim, marking my territory. Her eyes drop to our intertwined hands before flicking up to me, the scowl on her face displaying her inner feelings clearly. So this is how Hades felt on both occasions when Braccius and Silas had similar reactions.
"Calm down. It's temporary. Come through to the meeting room. Everything will be explained." Willow does not wait for a response but instead turns on her heel and walks away. Merabel and Jezabel look at us and nod before following. Sol and Craven, along with Silas and his cronies, have already entered after Craven went to fetch Hades a change of clothes.
Alone now, I stand up from my spot next to Hades on the stairs in the lobby, my gaze finding the lush green lawn outside. I wander over to the entranceway framing the view, wishing I can escape this situation. Why are we even here? This is the last place I want to be. Why can't I just have a normal life?
"Are you okay?" Hades is directly behind me now, and when I turn around to face him, his concern clutches at my heart.
"You shouldn't worry about me. Are you okay?" This man had just been forced to shift and was asking me if I was okay.
"I'm fine. You have just come face to face with the monster that abused you for years. That is much worse than this," he says, slapping his wrist and the red cord wrapped around it.
It was a binding cord. A magical item that blocked abilities and powers, effectively making the wearer as weak as a human. It was outlawed over twenty years ago, so I am surprised to see one of these now. I only know about it because my mother had a whole box of them. They were kept in the relic room under our house. I'd even put one on and then freaked out when I couldn't get it off. My mother had to call one of the Coven elders to remove it. I try to remember how it was removed, but the memory is fuzzy.
"Addie?" Hades grips my shoulders, reminding me of the question he has asked. Am I okay?
What was surprising was that Willow was the worst part of the previous half-hour. I thought it would be meeting Silas again. But that was secondary to facing a woman I was comparing myself to physically, a woman I was intimidated by because of the apparent intimacy that existed between the two of them. The way she had hunched down beside him. The way he had said her name. The way their eyes locked. They knew each other more than just as acquaintances. But how much more? That question tormented me, and while I wanted to ask him, I didn't feel I had the right to.
It had also awakened a possessive monster in me, one that felt like it could rip Willow apart just because she deigned to look at what was mine. Mine. I want to laugh at the notion. I had fought against slavery for most of my life only to want to own another person myself. Did that not just make me like Silas?
