Before he can continue, Merabel's voice interrupts the moment, calling for us to join her.

Hades lets go of my hands and then grabs mine and his tea before heading outside.

My mind is still reeling from what he said. I don't even know why. I don't know what it means, but my body seemed to sense it was something huge—life-changing.

Hades pulls a chair out for me and then sips my tea before placing it on the table, these little thoughtful gestures still catching me off guard.

"I see you have already found your rhythm." Merabel's assessment of our interactions makes me blush.

Hades sits beside me, his thick thigh brushing mine and his presence so impactful that I squirm in my seat. After the all-to-real dream I had about him this morning, I can barely look at him without visuals of him and me naked flooding my mind. His delicious body, covered in a simple blue t-shirt and jeans now, was revealed to me and was now seared into my mind like a tattoo.

"So. Let's start with the obvious. You two are mates." Hades and I look at each other, then he nods, confirming her words.

"The sparks are there?" Nods from both of us have Merabel smiling.

"What does it mean, though? My exposure to the outside world has been limited. I don't know much about your species besides that you can shift into wolves, have superior healing and hearing, and are strong." Thanks to Silas controlling what I read and heard, I had to glean snippets of information about the outside world from other slaves and vampires, unaware I was listening in.

"Our deity, the Mood Goddess, mother of all werewolves and lycans, blessed us with one true fated mate. The perfect match is sealed with a bond that is both physically and emotionally felt. It's more than lust and attraction. It's a connection, a tethering of one soul to another, knowing that no matter what, that person will be there for you. Will love you unconditionally. Forever. Beyond this lifetime and into the next."

Merabel's words paint a picture of something so beautiful and so romantic—a love that people can only dream of. A love that my heart and soul craved whenever I felt lonely over the last couple of years.

Then I remember Hades telling me about his mate, the one that had died. The one I can only assume is in the picture hanging above the fireplace. He felt this with her. Which also meant that he would love her forever. How, then, could I be his mate? How would this work if there was no room in his heart for me? The thought makes my chest clench, and I scold myself for the feeling. I had no right to it. We did not know each other. We were nothing to each other except a mistake. Whatever was going on here couldn't be true. And I hated that it couldn't because I wanted more than anything for it to be real. I wanted that kind of love. And I wanted it with a man like Hades. No, I look over at him. I want it with him, not just with someone like him.

"We can have that, Addie. You think this is a mistake, but it isn't. Drea was my fated mate, but you are too. There is room for both. I didn't think so initially, but the more we are around each other, the more I can feel the truth. I can be all of that to you. I know I can."

The sincerity and determination in his voice make me want to believe like he does, but I just can't. I cannot compete with the ghost of his past. She looks to be perfect, whereas I am not. Instead of answering him, I look away, changing the subject.
