Today is a really beautiful day, it's been raining for days and finally the sky is shining. You look out the window and when a ray of sunshine shines on you, warming your face, you close your eyes and sigh.
When you open them again your gaze falls on a stream in the distance, you know who you'll find there. Sitting on a rock, always busy writing texts for the king or dabbling in writing poems. You giggle because you've always found them funny, or it's you who doesn't understand them. It's been weeks since you've seen each other, he's been busy with Galadriel managing some business in the north... orcs...
A small gust of wind opens the curtains behind you and ruffles your hair. One of the curtains hits a vase that slides off the ledge. "Oh, no!" But with a wave of your hand you stop it in mid-air and put it back in its place. You look down. "I wonder if it had ended up on someone's head, hahaha."
You turn and start getting ready, you can't wait to see him.
Your steps are fast, you hear the stream in the distance.
And there he is.
As you get closer you immediately notice his brown curls adorning his pointed ears, always perfect. He hasn't noticed you yet, his expression serious and thoughtful... or rather... tired.
"I knew I'd find you here." You tell him warmly.
Elrond greeted you with a smile. "Ah, my heart sings to see you my dear!" He greets you, placing his quill on the parchment. His way of greeting you warms your heart, he uses words as if they were colors to paint a canvas. "As always, you are as silent as a butterfly."
You sit down next to him "I heard about your return and I came to look for you... even though I thought you were coming to me." You say teasingly.
Elrond looks down with an embarrassed smile "Well, you're right. I just needed a moment's detachment from everything I've seen these past few weeks." A deep sigh escapes his lips "I've been busy with the affairs of Lindon. It seems there's always something to attend to."
"Elrond... your eyes are tired..." you tell him worriedly.
"Ah, yes, I do look a little tired, don't I?" Elrond said, rubbing his eyes and letting out a tired sigh.
An exasperated sigh escapes your lips. "You work too much, as always."
"Perhaps I do work too much, but it's my duty to take care of the king's political affairs. Though I must admit, a break would be nice." He answers, turning his face slightly towards you, smiling with his usual cheeky grin.
But in response you take out a bag of treats from under your bodice. "Tadan! I brought some treats!"
"Oh?" Elrond perked up a little at the mention of food. "And what have you brought?""
"Some pastries that the kitchen staff made this morning. They are no longer warm but have retained their softness."
Elrond eyes lighting up. "You truly know the way to my heart, my dear."
You giggle embarrassedly, his poetic words always making you blush.
"Well, let's not keep these treats waiting then!" Elrond said with a smile, taking one of the sweets and taking a bite. "Mmm, delicious!" He says in a deep sigh, after the sweet, aromatic taste hits his taste buds.
You eat in harmonious silence, accompanied by the birds and the sound of the stream. Before finishing the last pastry you become serious.
"Have you heard the news?" You don't want to interrupt this peaceful moment, but you are worried. "Sauron, Adar... the orcs. They are approaching."
Elrond's expression darkened at the mention of Sauron. "Yes, I have. Sauron is indeed making his move. It seems as if the shadow of Mordor grows ever longer by the day. That's what's kept me away these past few weeks."
"You are not fit for war. Why do you insist on accompanying Galadriel on her... travels? She is too obsessed with Sauron and her brother's death. You should only..."
But Elrond raises a hand to silence you. "Galadriel is a dear friend. And I am prepared to take her out of her dark world. But, that's true." Elrond agreed, a hint of melancholy in his voice. "My strength lies in wisdom and leadership, not in the art of war."
"I know you've fought by her side before." You tell him curiously.
"Indeed, we have. But times were different then." Elrond said, a hint of weariness in his voice. "We were younger, and the world was not as dark as it is now. The battles we fought were for different causes, and the enemies we faced were not as powerful as Sauron."
Elrond's gaze is lost in past memories, the noise of battle and the cries of pain of his companions echo in his pointed ears. He is so lost in his memories that he does not notice the pastry he is eating, slipping from his fingers.
The treat sways in front of him, he watches it hover in mid-air, his expression mixed with surprise and concern. "Y/N, you shouldn't use your powers so freely" he tells you as he looks around. "Sometimes I forget the depth of your abilities and that I can't let anyone know that..."
"Don't worry, there's no one here but us." You say, as you grab the treat with two fingers and hand it to him.
But then you huff, hugging your knees. "I wish I could use my powers freely, I wish I could be... myself." With a sad look you look at the horizon.
"I understand your desire to let your powers flow freely." Elrond says, his voice gentle. "But you know the risks as well as I do. Your power is great, and it can be dangerous if not used with care."
You turn to him with sad eyes. "That time was a mistake! I didn't mean to..." you lower your gaze and turn back to the horizon. "...I didn't mean to make that chimney explode. I can control my powers, It was just a moment of..." You stop, unable to find the right words to justify that day.
Elrond closes his eyes for a moment, trying to find a way to not make you nervous. He places his hand on yours and caresses it with a finger.
You immediately lean on his shoulder. He smiles and wrapped his arm around your shoulders, drawing you closer to his side. "I did not mean to imply anything by my words. But someone needs to keep you out of trouble" he teases, giving your shoulder a gentle squeeze.
As always, he knows how to steal a little smile from you, even when you give in to sadness and worry. "And that person would be you?"
"Of course, who else? I've been watching out for you for centuries now."
"I think I've gotten you out of a lot of... unpleasant situations with my powers." Your laughter makes his shoulder shake. He lets out a hearty laugh, unable to deny the truth in your words. "Yes, I must admit, I have a knack for finding myself in predicaments. But I'm grateful to have you by my side, for without you, I might have been in even worse trouble!" His face is close to your forehead now, his words coming out like a warm sigh.
"You know... I'm grateful for your powers. You saved a dear friend of mine."
"You mean Durin?"
He nods "Seeing him relieved after you pulled those dwarves trapped under the rubble... He'll never stop thanking you. I know he'll keep the secret, he and Disa are honorable people."
A cold breeze hits you. The sky rumbles. You look up to see the sky but you stop, lost in your eyes. You were so close you didn't notice. His gaze bounces from your eyes to your lips. Time stops, your heart races, his lips part. You feel him swallow before opening his mouth again but... a loud thunder wakes you from this wonderful memory.
The images blur, fade away and in their place there is only a cold dark cell.
