To start out, kits are born to a pair chosen by the Clan leader (all mated pairs are chosen to ensure strong bloodlines). From the start, life is filled with excruciating heat and dangerous elements that wipe out the weakest in the first two or three moons of life. For this reason, kits are usually not named until they are around three moons old. What usually kills off kits in this stage is dehydration, heat stroke, starvation, or falling from higher ledges if they decide to risk their safety for an adventure. Due to lack of food in the territory, queens have a limited supply of milk, so most kits are weaned early, another trial to show if they are strong enough to withstand the hardships to come.
