PLANNING A SURPRISE party sounded like a job for Sophie Blackwood.
Of course, that didn't mean that she would go shopping for it alone. As they walk through the aisles, Charlotte listens to Sophie pretending to critique the items on display, occasionally picking out a bag of candy and gag gifts. She was clearly having fun putting her skills as a wedding planner to use.
"M&M's or skittles?" Sophie asks, holding up two bags of either candy.
"Skittles," Charlotte answers, grabbing the red bag and placing it in the shopping basket.
Sophie continues, "Sour patch or Nerds?"
"Nerds."
"Reese's or Kit Kats?"
"Reese's."
Jasper was finally returning home today, and the two women thought it would be nice to welcome him back home with a small gathering.
When Charlotte first met Sophie back in college, she never expected that they would end up becoming roommates even after graduation. Sophie had lived in the UK until she was seventeen, but a messy family divorce had pulled her to live with her mother in New York, and she eventually settled on enrolling in NYU.
Finding out she was going to room with Sophie though, wasn't something Charlotte looked forward to initially.
Sophie was known to come from a ridiculously wealthy family. Girls in her social circle tended to be pretentious or obnoxious, sometimes both, and if she was being honest, Charlotte had already pegged Sophie as one of them even before meeting her.
But Sophie wasn't like that at all.
While the other girls in her clique paraded around school like they owned it, slinging the latest designer items or bragging about their latest hookup, Sophie chose to stay out of the spotlight — oftentimes mocking the whole childishness of it all.
They clicked instantly the moment they met, her bright and lighthearted energy providing a fun balance to Charlotte's quiet, introverted nature.
It doesn't take long for something else to catch Sophie's eye, gasping in excitement as she tiptoes to grab a maroon item from the top shelf of a white display.
"Ooh ! Now this is what we actually need!"
For someone so dainty, Sophie had way too much energy.
Charlotte is busy reading the label on something she knows they definitely don't need for the party when she feels a sash being slung onto her shoulder. Looking down to see what it says, there in italic, it reads ; bride-to-be.
There is a mischievous grin on Sophie's face as she waits for Charlotte's reaction, and Charlotte tries to suppress the smile tugging at her lips.
"Is this what you do when you're helping clients plan their weddings?" she asks, trying to brush off her embarrassment.
