THERE ARE MOMENTS in life when you're not quite sure whether to laugh or cry.
If there were a reel of her life, this would be at the top of those moments for Charlotte.
An awkward pause settled in the air. For a second, Charlotte swears she feels her heart literally sink to her stomach. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees Celia's eyes dart anxiously to her, as if afraid of how she would react. Then it hits her.
Celia knew. That's why she was so quiet.
Thankfully, Sophie breaks the silence.
"Oh," she says blankly, blinking, trying to process the news. Letting out a breath of surprise, her hands fly up to her mouth in disbelief."Oh Jasper!" she finally exclaims, standing up to hug him.
Sophie continues. "That's amazing! You never told us anything about seeing someone. W-when, where — how? Oh ! What's her name ? Is she Australian too?"
A shy smile flits on Jasper's lips, "Her name's Amelia. Yes, she's Australian, she's one of my colleagues. We've been working together the past year and well, we fell in love. She is so smart and selfless and amazing. On top of that, she is so-oh beautiful. I'm crazy about her."
The tone of his voice is disgustingly drunk with infatuation at the mention of this woman, and Charlotte feels her toes curling in discomfort. She had never heard him talk about anyone this way before. No wonder he had been blowing her off for the past six months.
Charlotte can feel Jasper's eyes lingering on her, only this time it doesn't make her feel all warm and giddy inside. It's hesitant and careful, piercing through her as if trying to gauge her reaction.
The fact that Celia was already watching her made her feel like she had to be careful about how she reacted, but with Jasper on top of that?
It made her want to crawl into a hole and die there.
If it hadn't been for Sophie, her body wouldn't have known to react at all. So instead, she merely mirrors Sophie's expressions, managing a smile as she stands up to face him at eye-level. Jasper's smile falters ever so slightly when his eyes land on the locket he had given her just a year ago, and if she didn't know him so well, she would've missed it.
"That's so great Jasp."
Raising her arms to motion for a hug, he leans in, her nose bumping against his ear — their arms feeling stiff and unsure.
"Congratulations," she says.
After patting him on the back awkwardly, she pulls away.
"Wait a minute so when's the wedding? You know I think I might just know of a great wedding planner for you," Sophie adds in the last part, pressing her tongue against her cheek as she smirks cheekily.
