GLENWOOD FALLS IS a three hour drive away from the city.

Situated upstate, lush forests and houses seated atop hills stretched endlessly as the car whizzed by — a contrast to the looming skyscrapers that popped up everywhere in the city.

She hadn't been back here in years. When she was little, Charlotte always pictured coming back home from the city to get married. It would be a backyard wedding, small and intimate, Jasper standing anticipatingly at the altar.

She never would've thought that it would've been to run errands as a best man. For him of all people.

After the impromptu gathering the other day, Jasper had asked her to accompany him for a visit back home to let his parents know about the engagement — for moral support he had said. His parents were two of the most loving and supportive people she had ever known, but he knew that breaking the news to them on such short notice would freak them out.

Charlotte got that, but she didn't understand why he didn't just bring Amelia instead, given that she was his fiance after all.

"I wanted to, but Sophie's got a packed itinerary for her. They're checking out wedding venues together and I told her I'd be happy with whatever she chooses."

"Plus, it's been awhile since we've hung out just the two of us."

So that's how she finds herself sitting in his living room on Wednesday afternoon with his parents, Lynette and Dylan. She felt oddly out of place, despite having sat there countless times.

    "Mom. Dad. I'm getting married."

Lynette's hands move to her mouth in surprise, letting out a squeal of joy.

"Oh! Oh honey," she says, putting her hands on her chest.

Getting up from the sofa, she moves forward to embrace him in a hug. Dylan follows in suit, smiling proudly at his son.

    "My boy. Congratulations!"

Dylan looks between Charlotte and Jasper, his eyes glazed with excitement.

"I always knew you two would end up together."

Charlotte's shoulder stiffens immediately, an uncomfortable silence hanging in the air. It had been a running joke between the gray-haired couple. During the night of their junior high school formal, Dylan had made a similar remark as he took the picture of the two of them in their dress and suit.

"Trust me kids, one day you two are gonna be walking down the aisle to each other," earning an embarrassed look from little Jasper.

"Dad!" he protested, his cheeks turning red. Feeling the tip of her ears grow hot, Charlotte just laughed it off, both of them not daring to say anything.
